The Best Gift You Can Give Today
Colorado Gives Day
The countdown to Colorado Gives Day is on! Your support of Mountain Youth counts toward our Dec 6th goal. All participating Colorado Gives Day nonprofits earn a percentage of the statewide incentive fund, so the more we raise, the more we get!

As we get ready for the biggest giving day of the year, we reflect on the difficult times we’ve weathered together over the past two years. Despite these challenges, Mountain Youth remains strong and committed to continuously and collaboratively improve the lives of youth in the most powerful ways possible.

We’re asking you to join us for Colorado Gives Day to make a difference in the lives of youth in our community. Help us meet our goal early so that we can continue serving youth and families! Every year, Colorado comes together as a community, sharing stories and raising funds. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to Mountain Youth. Your support and generosity is appreciated now more than ever. The young people of Eagle County are counting on us!
YOUTH SPOTLIGHT | Franco Rodriguez
Franco is one of those kids that uses his imagination to think critically through tough situations.

One of the great joys about living in this community is seeing the amazing opportunities youth have access to, as well as the ambition youth have to seek opportunities out for themselves. When first meeting Franco Rodriguez, a Junior at Eagle Valley High School, he comes across as quiet and unassuming. However, as soon as he starts talking, one learns he has a resume that rivals anyone 10 or 20 years older than him. What’s even more inspiring is his humility as he discusses his activities, awards, and future goals. Franco may be the first young person I’ve met that knows when he wants to retire and has a plan to get there (at age 55 by the way), and this won’t just be a retirement but a chance to earn his PhD and go on to be a professor of film making in his later years.

At an early age of 6, Franco was introduced to photography and film-making that has led him on a creative and fulfilling path. In his free time, he is taking classes and workshops through colleges. As a part of school, he serves in the role of executive producer of media stuff for the Eagle Valley TV (EVTV) journalism class. EVTV was asked to create a story for Rocky Mountain PBS about the effects of the pandemic on schools. The story was such a success they put it on the national PBS news hour! Franco has entered many video competitions and found tremendous success. He won the national energy foundation competition, out of 145 contestants in 9 states, on a piece about global warming and the benefit of buying electric vehicles. He also won best cinematography, best lighting, best sound design, and best computer effects in the 2022 Dare Devil Film Fest. His work with EVTV also achieved 3 Best of Colorado awards. His amazing portfolio can be viewed here.

DIFFERENCE MAKER | Hannah Ross and the
Your Hope Center School-based Team
Hannah adores advocating for families and embraces opportunities to change systems to support healthy environments and therefore positive behaviors.

It is incredibly unique and impactful to serve in a community where so many organizations come together to assess and address the most critical needs facing local youth. Your Hope Center has humbly and vigorously crept from one school-based clinician in late 2018 to sixteen clinicians supporting every public school in the Eagle River Valley. Hannah Ross stepped up as the first school-based clinician in 2018, based out of Homestake Peak School. With a background in social work, Hannah adores advocating for families and embraces opportunities to change systems to support healthy environments and therefore positive behaviors. In her previous work as an Eagle County School District Prevention Coordinator, Hannah recognized the needs facing many local students. She focused on school and district strategies, as well as student referrals to therapy, yet there were frankly very few therapists available to refer to. Hannah was eager to join Your Hope Center when they opened their doors in our community and has grown into a supervisor role, supporting ten school-based clinicians. “I am most proud of our clinicians, pivoting to meet the needs of students, such as expanding into all elementary schools. We have also been enthusiastic about growing our intern program,” Hannah shares. As in many fields, our community does not have as many licensed clinicians as we need to meet the demands of the community, so Your Hope Center dove into a “grow your own”- type model. All Your Hope Center licensed clinicians have, at minimum, a masters in the field. In order to attract and retain quality therapists, they are able to hire and supervise masters and doctoral-level candidates as interns and enable them to gain their required hours and real-life experience by serving in schools with close support from veteran colleagues.
Your Hope Center school-based clinicians may provide individual, group, and family supports all within the school building for students and families, typically on a weekly basis. Common presenting concerns include trauma, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, grief, difficult peer relationships, family divorce, moving- any significant life or behavioral change that may have a long-term impact on the student. This enables school counselors to stay focused on addressing short-term needs, academic resources, and broad universal prevention supports for all students.

Mountain Youth is hiring a Community Mobilizer
Mountain Youth is hiring a Community Mobilizer to support the mission of the organization by building community partnerships, facilitating community-wide health and safety initiatives, engaging in advocacy, and increasing the youth voice.

The primary role of the Community Mobilizer is to rally a variety of constituents around environmental change in Eagle County. Environmental change for positive health outcomes is long-term, systemic shifts in norms, policies, and behaviors across the entire population of the county. This includes people who are already motivated for change and also those who may need information and education that substantiates the need for change. Mountain Youth is invested in creating sustainable environmental changes that reduce youth access to and use of substances, promote positive health behaviors, address community norms and risk factors, enhance protective factors, elevate diverse community voices, and create equitable systems of support for youth and families.

This is a full time position with benefits based out of Eagle County.

COMMUNITIES THAT CARE
The Communities That Care (CTC) Data Team Update
Our dedicated Data team reunited on November 10th and looked at cohort data about perception of availability of substances through the lens of ethnicity (White and Hispanic primarily). The participants also explored the numbers, percentages and trends for the risk factor of early initiation of substances. We also discussed the possibility of a community level data team with a deeper level of collaboration. The members expressed a need to define the goals and outline of time commitment and logistics.
There was a point where our attention was drawn to mental health data, more specifically regarding suicide. The quote of the evening to remember is from Beth Reilly, "Smaller numbers can be a big deal! "
The Communities That Care (CTC) Media Team Update

The CTC Leverage A State Wide Media Campaign Team has been working with enthusiasm on holding community events in upcoming months about promoting the CDPHE created resource Forward Together.

Youth will be involved in every aspect of the early 2023 event: planning, introductions and facilitation. The participants compiled a menu of engaging activities based on the Forward Together resource that will be explored with the audience!

The goal is for adults to understand and have compassion with youth and their experiences and for the youth to see the adult perspective of safety and responsibilities. Stay tuned for more information!
We always welcome new and enthusiastic participants in our Communities That Care teams. For more information on how to get involved, please contact Sandy Schroeder, Director of Community Engagement, at sschroeder@mountainyouth.org.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
Upcoming Events
In November, Eat Chat Parent hosted a fully bilingual event in Spanish and English with speakers Juan Carlos Hernandez Barraza, LPC, ADDC, NCC with Colorado Mountain Medical and Cassandra Armas, LSW with Your Hope Center. They shared information on how to identify the signs of depression, anxiety, and stress and provided support, resources, and tools for youth and community members. The goal was to break down barriers to discussing and accessing mental health care and was attended by six local youth serving non-profits who came to provide resources, tools, and support to attendees. The organizations present were Eagle Valley Behavioral Health (EVBH), Eagle Valley Outdoor Movement (EVOM), SpeakUp ReachOut, Your Hope Center, My Future Pathways, and YouthPower365. The community came together to create a welcoming and open environment to support the mental health of all youth in our community.

At our next Eat Chat Parent Event, Mountain Youth is excited to host Maggie Seldeen from High Rockies Harm Reduction. Maggie will discuss how to reduce and prevent the major risks of fentanyl in our community. Fentanyl is the single deadliest drug on the market. It is easy to obtain and comes in many different forms. Join us to increase awareness and prevent fentanyl use and fatal overdose. The event will take place on December 15 at Colorado Mountain College from 5:30-7:30pm.

As always, these events are free to everyone, with dinner, childcare and interpretation provided. Please join us with your family to learn, connect, engage, and grow as a community. We look forward to seeing you there!

Join Mountain Pride for a conversation around inclusion in athletics, the classroom, and beyond. Enjoy free dinner and engaging conversation with Schuyler Bailar. Bailar (he/him) is the first transgender athlete to compete in any sport on an NCAA Division 1 men’s team. By 15, he was one of the nation’s top-20 15-year-old breast-strokers. By 17, he set a national age-group record. In college, he swam for Harvard University, on Harvard’s winningest team in 50 years. Schuyler’s difficult choice – to transition while potentially giving up the prospect of being an NCAA Champion – was historic. His story has appeared everywhere from 60 Minutes to The Washington Post. Schuyler’s tireless advocacy has earned him numerous honors including LGBTQ Nation’s Instagram Advocate for 2020. In 2021, Schuyler also released his first middle-grade novel, Obie Is Man Enough. And in 2022, Schuyler created LaneChanger.com making gender literacy education accessible to every team, school and company.
