MEDITATION

By Jo Strausz Rosen

At JSL Fleischman Residence, the Life Enrichment Coordinators, and volunteer practitioners of reiki, mindfulness and meditation have been bringing peaceful moments to the residents for many years often utilizing music, and the spoken word.

Millions of people claim meditation, otherwise known as “sitting still and thinking about nothing,” can be as simple as it is surprisingly hard. Why is it hard? When we practice shutting out the noise in our brains, we begin to notice all the thoughts that weigh us down, worry us, take us out of the present and send us down a rabbit hole of worry.  If we can quiet our brains, we can connect to the source of our energy, guidance and spirituality. I like to think this source is Gd.

PAST PRESIDENT APPRECIATION

Audrey Levin resides in Arkansas and visited Fleischman Residence last week. She is the great granddaughter of Jacob Levin, who was the first President of Jewish Home and Aging Services, May 21, 1907 – December 31,1943. Audrey visited her parents, Edwin Levin, the grandson of Jacob and his wife, the artist Sandra Levin. Audrey is spending a great deal of time researching the history of her family and will continue to send along details of Jacob Levin’s life as she unearths his roots. In the halls of Fleischman Residence is Jacob’s distinguished portrait in oil. We like to think he appreciates overseeing the bustling activities and events and the joy on the faces of the residents!

We invite our JSL community of readers to become writers and send in your stories for the opportunity to appear in the Shabbat Shalom Newsletter. Relevant stories about aging, volunteerism, living our best lives, inspirations, and mindfulness will be appreciated. Funny, sad, poignant, newsworthy, nonpolitical pieces are welcome. Contact nlupi@jslmi.org if you are interested.

JSL JULY HAPPENINGS

GUYS & GRUB

Some of the men of Meer Apartments (West Bloomfield) gabbed over grilled grub this week, strengthened friendships and shared joy. What was once planned for an outdoor event at Drake Sports Park took place in the Arts & Crafts room due to inclement weather. The guys didn't grumble while dining on hot dogs, chips, coleslaw and drinks, enhancing their usual lunchtime routine.

"This men's group is important to them. They feel a sense of belonging, forming relationships and continuing to get to know each other better," said Myriam Cohen, Meer Program Coordinator. "All men are welcome."

Residents included: Allan Grundy, Lee Siegel, David Horowitz, Fred Krainen, Steven Meyers, Sherwin Corlin, Kenneth Volk, Bernie Jonas, Jack Schwartz, Ralph Woronoff, Seymour Ross, Irving Dunn and Manny Kalef. Meer Building Supervisor Rick Napper joined the fun. They were all surprised to learn:

Fun fact #1: Steven Meyers stood up at Sherwin Corlin’s wedding and borrowed a tuxedo from a friend for the day.

Fun fact #2: Manny Kalef worked at Tiger stadium as a teenager when "The Hebrew Hammer" Hank Greenberg played.

FLOWER POWER

On Monday afternoons in July, the residents of the Brown Memory Care floor participate in an indoor Flower Walk. Each week, Trader Joe’s of Bloomfield Hills donates flowers that are transformed into beautiful floral arrangements by the Fleischman Assisted Living residents. The arrangements are displayed in the Fleischman Club Room before they are placed throughout the building. During this time, the Club Room is transformed into a gallery of flowers, with classical music playing in the background. Memory Care residents visit the clubroom, and enjoy the floral arrangements and relaxing ambiance. Each resident is given the opportunity to color a floral themed masterpiece while inspired by the living floral arrangements. This is a perfect opportunity for conversation, relaxation and engagement to BLOOM!

WRITERS

AND EDITORS

FRIENDS of JSL is working with residents to create and publish a book of stories by and about the amazing folks who make up the JSL community. We’re looking for interviewers, writers, and editors who can help residents capture their stories in writing and help polish a finished draft. And we are looking for residents who would like to include a story. Pieces will be approximately 1-4 pages. For more information, call Beth Robinson at 248 569-5092 or email brobinson@jslmi.org.

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Turn on the AC

The spirit of summer is in the air and beckons us to turn on the air conditioner. Let us also consider the vital task that lies upon each of us to “condition the air” by spreading words of healing and happiness.

The following is taken from the book, Hayom Yom (Day to Day) by The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.

One’s life is dependent on the air around us. Without air one cannot live, and the quality of life is dependent on the quality of air. In a moral and spiritually healthy atmosphere there is healthy life. The first general step in bringing healing to the atmosphere is to purify it. Purification of the air is the task of every person. We purify the air when reciting words of Torah and speaking words of meaningful content when in a store, or on the street, or riding the subway.”

Enjoy the comforts of cooled air and remember that it is important for us to always condition the air and the environment around us.

Shabbat Shalom by Phone - Enjoy some inspiration.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
