Dear Residents -

I ask all of you to pray for the people of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, who have been so tragically impacted by Hurricane Helene. With a death toll now over 223, hundreds still missing and the destruction of so many homes, our fellow Americans need all the help they can get. If you are looking to donate, HERE is a link to many highly-rated charities that are providing relief.

Unfortunately, the Orangetown Hungers 5K Heroes Run/Walk that was scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled due to the low number of people who signed up. We understand it is a busy time of year and there are many events going on. However, there are local families that struggle with food insecurity so, if you can, please consider donating to Meals on Wheels, the South Orangetown Food Pantry or another local food pantry. Click HERE for a list of local food pantries.

Saturday is going to be a busy day in Orangetown, with the Great American Cleanup at the Orangeburg Library from 10 am to 12 pm, the Pearl River Farmers Market at the Central Avenue Field from 10 am to 2 pm, and the Kyle John Boyce Fundraiser at the GAA from 12 pm to 6 pm.

Then on Sunday, we have one of my favorite events, Goodstock! This event is organized by Neil Berg, Johnny Markowski and Joe D'Urso, and benefits People to People. This year the show is dedicated to the memory of Tim O'Donohue, who had been part of Goodstock since its inception and recently passed away. To purchase tickets or make a donation, please click here.

With today being the last day of Rosh Hashanah, I hope that everyone who celebrates has a sweet New Year, L'Shana Tova.

Have a great weekend and be sure to enjoy time with family and friends.

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

Tappan Fire Department Wet Down

On September 28th, Supervisor Kenny, along with Congressman Lawler, State Senator Weber and Assemblyman McGowan, joined the celebration of the arrival of the Tappan Fire Department's brand-new fire truck. It was a great afternoon of fire trucks, food and awesome music by Cousins Moran.

Rescuing Christopher Columbus

Supervisor Kenny attended the unveiling of a Christopher Columbus statue at the Blauvelt Sons of Italy on Sunday. The century-old statue had been defaced and tossed into a lake in Virginia during the 2020 protests. In 2022, the City of Richmond donated the statue to the Italian American Cultural Association of Virginia, who restored the statue but could not find it a home locally – so they found it a home in Orangetown. As John Corritone, co-chair of the statue restoration committee in Virginia, stated: “It will be prominently displayed on their property to inspire all to embrace the spirit of discovery and foster a community that learns from history and champions tolerance.”

Halloween Fire Safety

Home fires caused by decorations

  • From 2017–2021 there was an average of 790 home structure fires that began with decorations per year. These fires caused an annual average of 4 civilian fire deaths, 33 civilian fire injuries, and $14 million in direct property damage.
  • Nearly half (48%) of these fires occurred because the decorations were too close to a heat source, such as a candle or hot equipment.
  • Approximately one-third (33%) of these fires were started by candles.

Safety Tips

  • Use glow sticks or battery-operated candles for jack-o’-lanterns and other Halloween decorations.
  • When choosing costumes, stay away from long trailing fabric.
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o’-lanterns with candles in them.
  • Keep Halloween decorations away from open flames and other heat sources, such as light bulbs and heaters.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes. Make sure all smoke alarms are working.
