Howdy Neighbors! 2022 was a year full of fun events, neighboring, and advocating for your communities. Thank you for continuing to trust us with your community needs. It has been an honor to serve each one of you!

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season filled with love, laughter, good food, and relaxation. We are looking forward to continuing to serve you all in 2023!

In March, we will be hosting Dinner with a Cheit (DWAC) to give community members 6 opportunities to have a discussion about public safety with the Chief of OCPD, Wade Gourley.   • Braum's An Affair of the Heart Feb. 10-12 Show. Oklahoma's largest and longest-running arts, crafts, and boutiques show returns Feb. 10-12, 2023, to the OKC Fairgrounds.
  • Friends of the Metropolitan Library System Booksale 2023 - Feb. 24, 1 - 7 pm. This book sale will offer approximately 800,000 books and media items covering a wide range of subjects. In the General Area, hardback books are $2 each and paperbacks are $1 each. Children's items are half the cost of adult items in the General Area. Items in the Better Books Room vary in price, though most are under $5.
  • LIVE! on the Plaza - Feb. 12th, 12 pm - 4 pm is the Plaza District's free & monthly art walk featuring art shows, live entertainment, great food, and local shopping. Join us as we celebrate one of Oklahoma City's best monthly festivals!

Weatherization Tips

Oklahoma weather can be unpredictable. Weatherizing your home will not only keep your home more comfortable during the unpredictable winter months, but it will also save your family some more money by saving energy. Below, you can weatherization resources to get you through the season.

  • The Oklahoma Department of Commerce is assisting low-income Oklahoma families with a no-cost weatherization program. Click the link to learn more.
  • OG&E’s weatherization program can help you save. Who doesn't want to stay warm and save some money? learn more here
  • There are multiple things you can do to save energy in your home. Helpful resources can be found at energy.gov.
  • Inclement weather creates issues with the city sidewalks. If you are noticing sidewalk damage in your neighborhood, check out the sidewalk repairs and replacement program offered by the city.

Strong Neighborhoods Initiative (SNI) Updates

On behalf of the Strong Neighborhoods Initiative Selection Committee and the City of OKC Planning Team, THANK YOU for participating in the SNI application and interview process. You all did a fantastic job! We loved your enthusiasm and enjoyed learning more about your great neighborhoods.

After careful consideration and deliberation, the committee's recommendation to City Council was approved on January 3rd:

  • Begin to work in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Neighborhood starting in July 2023 for a five-year term.
  • Continue SNI work in Capitol Hill for two more years, ending in June 2025
  • In two years, when Capitol Hill and Metro Park "graduate", the committee will reconvene and invite Heronville, NE Renaissance, Ross Heights, and Stockyards City to reapply to fill those two spots.

In the meantime, the committee recommends that all of the neighborhoods take advantage of the free services and workshops offered by Neighborhood Alliance, such as neighborhood organizing, resources, advocacy, and capacity-building training. Their website is www.nacok.org. We want to see you continue your momentum, get informed about resources, and reach your full potential!

If anyone is interested, I will be happy to talk with individual neighborhoods to provide feedback about yesterday's results. We can also discuss resources and contacts to address some of the issues you mentioned in the interviews.
