As 2022 comes to an end, I think we are all very happy that the past year was much better than 2020 and 2021. To go a full 12 months with our lives somewhat back to normal has been very refreshing. Now this is not to say that 2022 did not have its challenges, as there were many areas of life that produced some bumps in the road. One of the biggest issues has been inflation, which at times exceeded double digits. Increased cost of goods has taken a financial toll.

As we enter 2023, we all hope for a better economy, one which will create a positive financial picture for all Americans. 

In a recent report on WTAP, the station shared that 3 of the most popular New Year resolutions are:

1. Save more money
2. Pay off credit card debt
3.  Improve credit scores

These are wonderful goals for 2023 and are very important topics to consider and to make a plan on how to address.

At WV Central, we work every day finding and offering solutions to the three areas just identified. Here are some thoughts on each:

1. Save more money – Begin saving with each pay period by putting aside at least a small $ amount. The ability to save is very often just changing a pattern and creating a habit to intentionally set money aside. If you can make it by an automated process then you may not even miss it and it will add up fast.
2. Pay off credit card debt – In a perfect world, credit cards should only be used if you can afford to pay off the balance in full each month. Sadly, that is just not possible for most of us. So limit what you put on a credit card and either pay it in full or make more than the monthly required payment. Many consumers will pay off the lowest balance first or pay more on the highest interest rate, in both cases, you will feel like you are making progress and you will be. Saving more money can assist here also as once you have built a savings balance, you might consider using a debit card for purchases as the money is cleared immediately with no payments due and no interest accruing. 
3. Improve credit scores – Credit scores look at many factors such as the number of loans, outstanding balances, credit limits on credit cards and how much of that limit is used, are payments made timely, etc. Control the amount of loans that you have and work to pay on time and when possible pay the loans off. All of this works in a positive way when calculating your credit score.

Election of the 2023 Board of Directors

The nominating committee of West Virginia Central FCU has identified Vicki Thorpe, Ken Watts and Randy Cole to serve three year terms as volunteers on the board of directors.

The election will be held at our March 4, 2023 annual meeting as part of our business session. No nominations will be taken from the floor.

If you are a member in good standing and would like to be considered for a board position, you may do so by collecting signatures supporting your nomination. To be considered, you must collect at least 1% of the membership, which would require 218 signatures of current members of WV Central.
