A Note from Pastor Andy

Hello Maplewood,

This week in worship, we begin a worship series called “Come to the Table.”

Over the next five weeks, we will think together about five Bible stories that take place during meals:

- John 21, the post-resurrection appearance of Jesus on the beach at breakfast,

- Acts 2, a description of the very first church,

           - 1 Corinthians 10, Paul’s instructions about following dietary rules,

           - Luke 24, the “Road to Emmaus” story, and

           - John 6, Jesus’s identification as the “Bread of Life”

The image of feeding and being fed runs throughout scripture. The table is a powerful symbol of community and relationship, and forms the centerpiece of Maplewood’s vision statement: “A community whose body, mind, heart, and spirit are fed through the love of Christ.”

To be fed or nourished through the love of Christ is a beautiful metaphor for what God’s grace does. Grace is nourishment for our spirits, as surely as food is nourishment for our bodies. And offering grace to one who is suffering is an act motivated by love, as surely as offering food to one who is hungry.

We’ll start this week with a true “Show Me” moment in John 21. I mean, Jesus might as well have been from Missouri, he’s so “Show Me!” Curious? Be in worship on Sunday and check it out.

See y’all in church!

- Andy B.

A Very Merry Christmas in July is here at Maplewood UMC! A great time to celebrate and shop early for items needed for Build A Gift and for gift cards for the Giving Tree.

You are invited to "shop early" for items for Build-A-Gift and the Giving Tree. Both are events for our Christmas outreach for the children in the congregation and the community. The Giving Tree is outreach to families who need extra assistance at Christmas time. You can take a envelope from the Giving Tree and place a $25 Walmart gift card (or check) in it and put it in the offering plate.

For items purchased for Build-A-Gift be sure to mark off the item on the list on the message board at the back of the Sanctuary. Purchased items can be place at the bottom of the message board.

There are just 3 weeks of Freedom School left and we STILL need your help!
