Passing the Peace

One of our Journey high school support groups has a special version of passing the peace. They pass around a piece of paper that says "peace," and as each participant receives the paper, they turn to the person sitting next to them to share encouragement and hope. One teen told another:

"Even though I just met you tonight, I hope you know that it's okay to be sad and it won't always hurt this much."

The group facilitator said, "Those words of encouragement indicated that everyone had truly listened to each other. It made each teen feel heard and understood and unified the group as a safe space."

One of Journey's primary goals is to help children and teens realize they aren't alone in their grief and that all emotions they are feeling are okay. While no two grief journeys are alike, peer grief groups allow participants to receive support from each other as they express their feelings through activities and discussions.

Family Night: Joy and Grief During the Holidays

Journey families participated in our annual family night in mid November. On this special night, families stay together, working on seasonal crafts and playing games while also talking about how they will remember their person as they celebrate the holidays in the midst of grief. Virtual group participants got to participate too, as our program team hand-delivered a Family Night Pack to their homes.

Volunteer Spotlight- NCL: Sunflower Chapter

A.jpg

Journey of Hope is grateful for all of our volunteers, and this month we want to spotlight one of our awesome meal providers: National Charity League's Sunflower Chapter.

NCL fosters mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. The award-winning Sunflower Chapter selected Journey of Hope as one of the 27 community nonprofits it serves because their own members have experienced the impact of grief and loss, and they know the devastation that can cause.

"We feel very fortunate to be able to help others, make a difference, and see a smile on someone's face while we serve them a meal before their support groups. Knowing that we are part of that experience is very rewarding," says Vice President Philanthropy, Ann Newman.

The mothers and daughters enjoy working together in preparing and serving meals for families on group night and feel like they are part of something special when they volunteer at Journey of Hope. Journey staff and families are grateful!

Stuffed Animal Drive Thru

Before COVID, intake appointments happened at our office in Plano or on-site in Dallas. Intake appointments can be emotional and tough, so our founders wanted families to leave with a reminder of the support and comfort they receive when attending support groups. We have missed the delight and joy of families selecting the perfect stuffed animal from our bench in the office! On December 4th, we saw that joy again as we invited families to the ArtCentre in Plano to choose a special stuffed animal and decorate a rock for our memory garden.

Thank you to all those who donated stuffed animals!
