Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

Sarah Stafford

By Terra Avilla

If sweetness had a human form, it would come in the shape of Sarah Stafford. Now, little miss Sarah (aka Sarah Bunn) was brought into my life by former co-worker Jake Stafford. I tease Jake a lot, but one thing I will never tease him about is his good fortune and good taste in choosing a spouse. He hit the jackpot with Sarah.

Years ago, when the two were dating and I first met her, I absolutely adored her right away. Sarah has this innate ability to connect with people and has this sweet charm about her.

I like to think that I’m a good judge of character when it comes to someone being genuine or not, and Sarah is as genuine as it gets. She is sweet as can be – just a wonderful human.

When I worked at the police department, I loved being shift mates with Jake because that meant I got the treats Sarah would make, and boy can that woman cook and bake. If we got stuck working a holiday, Sarah would always prepare special treats not only for Jake, but for everyone in the office.

Then, there would be days I would come in and find her famous cookie bin in the kitchen and knew that she made a large batch of cookies “just cause.” Her chocolate chip cookies are famous.

Sarah is now the mother of a cute little Munchkin, and being a momma suits her. You can tell she simply loves being a mother and makes it look so easy. I love looking at pictures of her and her family as they write their story.

The other thing that I appreciate about Sarah is that no matter how busy the occasion, Sarah always makes it a point to acknowledge everyone. If I am standing next to my husband, not only does Sarah say hi to me, but she also greets Frankie, and my children.

Giving them all due to respect, and just making them feel like they matter. Can you imagine if the entire world was full of little Sarahs that went around making everyone feel as if they were important?

Sarah worked at the prison, and I know for a fact she was adored there as well. She has an easy-going disposition and is very bright. Of course, they would love her. How could anyone not find her anything but wonderful?

Sarah is a bright spot in our community. Anyone that ever would need help, could find it from Sarah. No judgement, no need to beg or be repaid, she is just that type of person. I am so happy that even though I don’t work with her hubby anymore, I still get to call this wonderful person my friend and get the honor of watching her beautiful little girl grow up!

And when little Cynthia is old enough, I will make sure to tell her why her momma is one of the reasons I love where we live.

LIHEAP Weather Bulletin: Triple Digit Temperatures Expected This Weekend

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued an Excessive Heat Watch for the weekend as temperatures are expected to soar to dangerous heights.

The heat watch is in effect from late Saturday morning until Monday evening, with high temperatures reaching into the triple digits for lower valleys and record high temperatures possible across northeastern California and western Nevada.

Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Temperatures will efficiently cool overnight, but with the days as warm as they will be, overnight lows will still be near record warm levels in many locations.

Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this situation. Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

4H and FFA Members Spread the Word as Fair and Jr. Livestock Auction Approaches

Here it comes everybody! The 2023 Lassen County Fair kicks off July 19th and 4H and FFA members from clubs all over the valley visited local businesses Tuesday, spreading the word about the fair, the 4H Barbecue and the July 23rd, Jr. Livestock Auction.

‘Promo Day’ is a long-standing, annual tradition where club members, parents and advisers first gather at Memorial Park for pictures and to assign sections of town to different groups, who then head out to hang posters in business windows up and down Main Street.

The Jr. Livestock Auction

“The Junior Livestock Auction is one of the most important part of a livestock exhibitor’s experience,” explains Lassen County Fair Manager Kaitlyn Midgely, “This is when the exhibitor gets to see all of their hard work pay off in the sale ring.”

“Raising these animals has taught these kids many useful life lessons which include responsibility, ownership, and dedication to a project and team.”

Just after dawn on Sunday of the fair 4H and FFA exhibitors will make their way to the judging pavilion at the fairgrounds, ending months of grooming, training, feeding, conditioning and care of their prized animals, to be sold at the fair’s annual auction.

Jr. Livestock exhibitors purchase their market animals in the Fall or Spring depending on species and are responsible for feeding, grooming and taking care of their animal. They are also responsible for calculating their average daily gain (how many pounds they need to gain per day) to produce the best quality meat product for the buyer.

The 4H and FFA kids spend the week at the fair, taking care of their animals, showing their animals and making friendships and connections that can become lifelong.

After a long hot week of washing, grooming and showing, the Jr. Livestock Auction is where the kids will sell their animals.

The 4H and FFA Junior Livestock Auction will be held Sunday morning in the judging pavilion at the fairgrounds. Buyer registration and a good morning social begin at 7:30. The auction begins at 8:30.

“We would love to see the community come out and show these kids that hard work really does pay off. We hope to see everyone at the Junior Livestock Sale Sunday July 23rd!”

Residents Asked to Conserve Water After Equipment Failure in City’s Largest Well

The City of Susanville’s Public Works Department is asking city residents to conserve water after an equipment failure sidelined the town’s largest well this morning, leaving the community dependent on a smaller backup source.

According to Susanville Public Works Director Bob Godman, the damaged well serves as the primary source of irrigation water for summer usage.

“As a result,” explains Godman, “we are currently relying on our backup well, albeit with a smaller pumping capacity.”

“Given the circumstances, the City’s utmost concern revolves around ensuring an adequate water supply for fire suppression purposes. Maintaining a sufficient volume of water in storage is critical to enhance the fire safety measures in Susanville.”

Godman is asking Susanville residents to reduce their outdoor watering activities by 25%.

“By collectively adhering to this measure, we aim to minimize water consumption and prioritize the preservation of our limited resources to maximize the city’s fire safety preparedness.”

“Unlike previous drought restrictions implemented in Susanville, it is important to note that this request does not entail any increase in water rates. The traditional summer rate will remain unchanged, ensuring that residents are not burdened with additional financial implications during these challenging circumstances.”

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the City of Susanville Public Works Department at (530) 257-1041.

Telephone Company To Expand Lines

July 12, 1929

Announcing an extensive construction program at Susanville yesterday, officials of the Nevada, California and Oregon Telephone and Telegraph Company, said a new copper circuit to Reno will be installed, providing a faster service and relieving the present heavy wire traffic between the two cities. Work on the improvements will start August 1.

The equipment will include the addition of phantom coils, providing a three-circuit line.

An entire new pole line will be constructed between Doyle and the Reno-Quincy highway, replacing the present line which follows the old right of way of the N. C. O. railway. The new line will follow the highway and will cost approximately $30,000, officials said.

A crew of fifteen men will be employed on the work under the supervision of Foreman Al Spitz and will be completed by November 1. Construction headquarters will be established at Doyle.
