CSTP's Legislative Updates Return with Samantha Miller
Washington's legislature convenes on January 9, 2023 and we are thrilled to welcome back Samantha Miller as CSTP's Legislative Updates Coordinator for the 2023 legislative session. She will be writing CSTP's weekly legislative email updates during the session. Her emails highlight issues educators care about and provide a quick snapshot on their progress through session.

Samantha has degrees in both Political Science and History, as well as a Master in Teaching. Samantha has worked in Elementary Education for 6 years, most recently as a 3rd Grade general education teacher. The majority of her time is spent chasing around her two children who keep her very busy. Samantha enjoys running, working in her yard, listening to political podcasts, and spending time with her family.
Zooming In & Out on Inclusionary Practices with Shelley Moore and Katie Novak
What are all the systemic pieces needed as a part of a Universal Design Learning approach? In order for inclusion to be fully realized, there is critical systems change/complex change work that needs to be done (zooming out). We will discuss strategies and vision for what a newly designed inclusive and equitable system looks like. Every time Katie zooms out, Shelley will zoom in with a specific story about what this looks like, sounds like, and feels like for an individual student. Shelley will also share stories that help us imagine the impacts of this system on individual students and families supported by this work.

Throughout the series, participants will:
  • Consider a case study of a student with disabilities and how the system impacts the student, family, and school.
  • Introduce Implementation Science and Improvement Science as drivers of inclusive and equitable systems.
  • Consider how to shift IEPs by recentering student voice in the process.
  • Address leadership and competency barriers such as co-teaching expertise to ensure that effective systems are in place to support all learners.
  • Consider the irony of UDL.
  • Address competency and implementation barriers to ensure that all learners and educators are supported.

Registrants will attend each session from 4-6 PM on January 11, February 6 and March 27 and six (6) clock hours will be available.
