With $4.5M from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, LaGuardia Will Cultivate the Next Generation of Food and Agriculture Professionals
LaGuardia has been awarded a $4.5 million, multi-year grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to support the development of “The Animal Science Discovery (ANSCId) Program: A Summer Experiential Learning, Career Development, and Scholarship Pipeline Program Between LaGuardia Community College and Rutgers University.” Forty-five percent of the funds will support LAGCC students through peer mentorship, career development opportunities, and paid summer residencies—such as the summer experiential learning program at the Rutgers University farm and research laboratories. The grant will also support a fully funded scholarship program that would serve as a pipeline for inner-city high school students in NYC to careers in food, agriculture and natural resources, as well as transfer scholarships for LAGCC students to earn bachelor's degrees in animal science at Rutgers. Additionally, a USDA liaison will join the LAGCC campus to assist in guiding students through careers at the USDA. Congratulations to project lead Dr. Preethi Radhakrishnan, professor of biological sciences and director of LAGCC’s Environmental Science Program.

Alvin Grullon (LaGuardia’23) Spends Summer Conducting Nuclear Physics Research at Michigan State University
Alvin Grullon, 31, who recently earned his Associate of Science in Physics from LaGuardia, is working on a nuclear physics project this summer at Michigan State University through the Research Experience for Undergraduates program funded by the National Science Foundation. In 2022, Alvin transferred to LaGuardia so he could take honors physics courses and find opportunities for other intensive projects. He participated in the CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP), collaborating with Dr. Roman Senkov, a physics professor at LaGuardia. “The CRSP program changed my life. It made me a more disciplined and efficient student,” said Alvin. He continued working with Dr. Senkov in the Physics Club, setting up telescopes for students to examine the moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. This fall, Alvin will begin his studies in physics at Stony Brook University. “My goal is to fully understand the fundamental laws of physics in order to develop my sense in theoretical perception,” said Alvin.

Commercial Photography Major Hosbel Hernandez Part of New York Times Photo Series on Affirmative Action
A few months before the Supreme Court’s issued its decision on race-conscious admissions, The New York Times asked student photographers at seven colleges and universities around the country to take photos documenting “what community looks like on their campuses — some that have long practiced affirmative action and some that don’t. Taken together, they create a fuller portrait of diversity in higher education in America.” Commercial photography major Hosbel Hernandez, who completed his degree in January 2023, was the sole community college student in the mix. Hosbel’s photos show LaGuardia students studying in the Atrium and scenes from his personal life. “I have a lot of responsibilities at home. Being the oldest and the first one in my immediate family to go to college, I need to work a lot,” said Hosbel, who is from the Dominican Republic.

M365 Outlook Mailbox Hygiene
One of the great benefits of the M365 Outlook cloud-based email system is everyone has a much larger mailbox – up to 100 times larger than the standard mailbox size. As large as it is, the mailbox still has a limit. If your mailbox reaches that limit, you will not be able to send or receive emails in Outlook, and IT will not be able to increase your mailbox size.
To stay within Outlook mailbox size parameters and to increase your productivity, we strongly recommend that you practice good mailbox hygiene by doing the following:
-
Review CUNY policies and guidelines regarding record retention so you know what emails you must keep and what you can delete.
- Use alternative platforms for messaging, such as Teams, to reduce volume.
- Delete or save file attachments in OneDrive or Dropbox, if needed.
- Set target dates to check your progress towards cleaning up and organizing your mailbox.
- Set aside time weekly to focus on organizing emails to keep and delete email.
-
Archive older items you want to keep. You can create a separate Outlook Data File (.pst) that you can open from Outlook any time you need it. By default, Outlook automatically archives items at a regular interval. You can also archive items manually whenever you want.
- Empty the Deleted Items and Junk Email folders frequently to make sure you aren’t keeping messages you don’t need.
