PRINCIPAL'S DESK

December 2, 2022

Greetings Tiger Student and Families,

Happy Wintertime and I hope you are all staying as warm as needed and getting around in a safe, careful manner. I was sharing with several of my staff members how this winter season and weather snuck up on me and my family, and I was not full prepared for the winter conditions and the snowy weather. Are we ever fully prepared for the shift in seasons? This year, the shift from fall to winter was a bit more abrupt than past years, but we are making the most of it and enjoying each day here at Lewis and Clark. Our kids, staff, and support staff from our community continue to work together to achieve excellence for every student. It is my vison and mission for our school, and it will continue to be what we use as we work collaboratively to make decisions as to what is best for our students, staff, and school.

One adjustment that we are making, starting Tuesday December 6, is entry access to Lewis Clark High School. It has been our past practice to support students and the many amazing programs we have for Zero Hour to allow entry to the Field House. We are no longer going to allow entry into the Field House for students or others during the school day, 6:45am-3:00pm. Students, families, and community partners must use and continue to use the main doors connected with the main building, or the Commons doors if there is a need to handicap, wheelchair, or if a medical need exists. We want to be able to support the safety and security for our students, staff, and building but assure that we are providing access and entry into our school in a welcoming manner, but secure manner as well. Students have been asked to make sure they have their student IDs in their possession while at school and school events. If a student needs a new ID card, they should connect with our secretary in the Student Office. The safety and security of our school is my top priority, so that students can learn, and teachers can teach.

We continue to see other improvements occurring at our school to help support our school environment. We have vape detectors installed in all our restrooms, and we are working with district support staff on how these devices work and how we will be able to monitor the devices and respond as needed. Our overall school security camera system has been upgraded both in the building and the cameras that support the exterior of our building have been upgraded. We have more area being covered and the pictures are much clearer for our viewing. This has enabled my staff to be able to review video footage in a timelier manner and respond to incidents much quicker.

The partnership and support from our district leadership has been so responsive and helpful as we strive to have the best school environment for all students. Your partnership as parents and guardians has been just as important. Together, we are making great progress towards meeting the needs and goals of every student and every staff member.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please connect with me by email at ivanc@spokaneschools.org or by phone at (509)354-6888. Stay safe and well.

Grateful to serve as your principal,

Mr. Ivan Corley

I would like to invite parents/guardians to join me for a new LC Parent Advisory Group.

We will meet the 4th Monday of each month (next meeting January 23) from 6:00-7:00pm in the LC Commons. I hope to see your there!

TEACHING & LEARNING UPDATES

2nd Semester planning is underway. We have built the 2nd semester classes and have started rolling students into those courses for the February 6 start of 2nd semester. When the rollover process begins, students will notice that 2nd semester Teams will begin appearing in their Teams list and the classes will appear in PowerSchool. Because almost all of our courses are full year, we will automatically register students for their 2nd semester classes. If your student needs a schedule adjustment, please contact the counselor to discuss options.

Registration for next year. In late January, we will begin the process for selecting classes for next year. We will use a number of Advisory periods to share information with students to help them with their selections. We will also share the information in the LC News so that parents are connected to the opportunities available. Our goal is to have schedules finalized before summer and there will be many opportunities to make changes throughout the process.

STUDENT SERVICES UPDATES

Happy Friday from the Student Services Team!

As we enter the winter season (as apparent by our unexpected snow day), we would like to remind our students to please dress appropriately for the outdoor temperatures. If you are in need of any clothing, coats, sweatshirts, etc., please let a staff member know and we can check out our Tiger Closet to help keep you warm.

Reminders/Updates:

  • STUDENT IDs: Any student arriving after the start of the school day (8:00am) will be required to present their student ID upon arrival to gain entry into the school. While it is not district or school policy that students wear their IDs, it is policy that they have them on their person while attending school or school events.
  • TWO Points of Entry ONLY: Student and staff safety is our number one priority, therefore starting December 6, we will be enforcing our two points of entry policy. Students and persons visiting the school will only be allowed to enter through two approved points on campus: the main front entrance and the commons entrance (ADA compliant entrance) both located on 4th Ave. All visitors MUST report to the public office to check in and obtain a pass. Please have an ID ready when entering. Thank you for your patience as we strive to create an even safer LC.
  • Vape Detectors: With the impeding installation and programming of our newly arrived vape detectors, we would like to remind students of behavioral expectations in the restroom and the disciplinary action should a detector be set off. All students leaving the restroom during or after a vape detector is activated will be subjected to search for prohibited items. Students found with prohibited items will undergo disciplinary measures. Please be mindful of your fellow students and leave such items at home.
  •  Hallway and Bathroom Sweep Reminders. Everyone has been doing an amazing job of utilizing the bathrooms and passing periods appropriately. If you need to use the restroom and do not have enough time in between classes, please report to your class, and wait the 10-minute hold time before following class procedures and heading to the restroom. One pass per person per classroom. Vandalism of any school property will result in discipline, no exceptions.
  • Attendance and Tardies: As we approach the upcoming holiday season, please bear in mind that students missing school due to a family trip, or any known extended absences must have a pre-arranged absence form on file that can be obtained in the attendance office. Parents may not PRQ their student for any reason other than the district approved excused absences/tardies. If your student is absent, please call on the same day or send your student with their valid excuse to be submitted to the office upon return to school. Our attendance policy is in accordance with the district policies and can be found in the upcoming student handbook and was presented during last week’s advisory lessons. We take the safety of our students and staff seriously. Unauthorized movement onto and from campus jeopardizes our ability to maintain a safe environment. If an absence needs to be excused, please do so through our attendance office 509-354-6968. 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences (spokaneschools.org)
  • Lunch policies: LC is a CLOSED campus. Students are not permitted to leave campus during lunch. Parents may NOT excuse their student to leave campus during lunch. Allowing students to leave jeopardizes the safety and security of the student and the campus and is not permitted. Students, please clean up your mess after lunch. Most of you have been doing an exceptional job! We heard a rumor that Mr. High-Edward has been randomly handing out prizes to students actively keeping our school clean!
  • Students interested in participating in a Student Life committee focused on school wide culture, encouraging positive behaviors, enhancing LC spirit, increasing inclusivity, giving students a voice, and building a strong positive LC community please email Mrs. Glines with your name, grade, and brief explanation as to why you would like to be involved to: rachelgl@spokaneschools.org.

Have a wonderful weekend and we will see all of you on Monday morning...on time (9:00am)!

Sincerely,

Brandon Bouge

Can I leave early? If you are leaving the school, you are free to leave whenever you are finished. You will not be allowed to roam the building or return to the building if you leave early.

Do I need to come every day? No, you only need to come on days when you have work you need to complete or that you need help to complete. You can come as often as you need.

SENIOR PLANNING

Graduation Honors

At graduation, all Spokane Public Schools use the same Latin Honors system to honor our top graduates. We will identify our Latin Honors students at the end of 1st semester. Here are the frequently asked questions about the Latin Honors System.

Why has the SPS School Board made changes to valedictorian status? For years, Spokane Public Schools recognized valedictorians – which almost every year were students with a 4.0 GPA. The problem with this policy is that it recognized grade point averages only, which actually discouraged students from taking more challenging courses.

Why did the SPS school board decide to use the Latin Honors system? Prior to weighted grades being implemented, the highest GPA a student could get was a 4.0. With weighted grades, every honors and AP course has the potential to bring a student’s weighted GPA higher. The top tier of the Latin Honors system (Summa Cum Laude) recognizes approximately the top 3 percent of the senior class, instead of those who took the most AP and honors courses. The goal is to reward students who work hard, take rigorous courses, and have a well-rounded schedule.

How will the Latin Honors system work? This system recognizes the top students at each high school using weighted grade point averages. Students have the ability to get three different levels of recognition: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude. These are the same designations that colleges across the nation use to recognize top students. These designations would honor approximately 3 percent (Summa), 5 percent (Magna) and 12 percent (Cum Laude) of our current senior class for each category.

How are grades weighted?

  • Weighted grades are calculated by providing higher points for grades earned in Honors courses and still higher points for grades earned in AP courses:
  • Unweighted Courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
  • Honors Courses: A=4.5, B=3.5, C=2.5, D=1.5, F=0
  • AP Courses A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0
  • Because SPS uses a +/- grading scale, the above table is only a sampling of options. The easiest way for students to calculate the weighted grade point average is to add .5 to the GPA for honors classes and a 1.0 for Advanced Placement classes.

Washington College Grant

Washington College Grant (WCG) is one of the most generous financial aid programs in the country. Recent high school graduates and working-age adults from many low- and middle-income families can qualify to receive money for college or career training. Amounts vary based on income, family size, and school or program cost. An eligible student from a family of four with income of $64,500 or less per year would get a full award. There is no separate application for WCG. Students should complete a federal financial aid application (www.fafsa.gov), which colleges will use to determine eligibility and make awards. Apprentices enrolled in a program at a community or technical college should also complete a financial aid application.

The Husky Promise is a tuition program at the University of Washington for any accepted UW students who fill out the FAFSA and qualify for Pell Grants. The Husky Promise will cover the difference in tuition that institutional grants or scholarships do not cover.

Paying for Yearbook, GSL, & Parking

GSL, Yearbooks, and parking permits are on sale now in the Business Office:

  • $42 student GSL Card (required for all athletes)
  • $47 Yearbook, yearbook pre‐sales end 12/16/22.
  • $5 student parking pass (must be purchased in the Business Office) or $90 for a meter pass. You may only purchase one parking pass this year, so you must choose between the lots and the meters.
  • Optional: Donation to Yearbook fund for students who are unable to purchase one. Every dollar donated helps a family in financial need. Thank you for your donation!

Student and Parent/Visitor Parking

Parent/Visitor Parking: LC does NOT have designated visitor parking, so you can park at any of the metered spots across the street. For after-hours events, you can park for free in any of the parking lots under the freeway. The doors to the Commons building are handicap accessible.

Student Drop-off/Pick-Up: 4th Avenue in front of LC's main building and Commons is school bus zone until buses leave. Please do not park on the south side of 4th to pick up your student. Parents picking up students will either need to arrive after 2:40pm (when the buses leave) or pick up students on Stevens, Wall, 5th, or in front of the Fieldhouse. Thank you!

Student Parking: LC students can park in the two freeway lots (in front of the Field House and in front of the church to the east). Be sure to display your student parking permit to avoid getting a ticket in the student lots. Student parking permits can be purchased in the Business Office for $5. The lots under the freeway directly in front of the main building and the Commons and the parking garage are only for LC staff and are monitored and ticketed for cars without staff permits.

Immunization Information

Please be aware that all students in Spokane Public Schools are required by state law to be fully vaccinated prior to the first day of attendance (RCW 28A.210.080). If the student’s immunization record is not complete, the student will be excluded from school. If your child is exempt from vaccination, please ensure that your school receives this documentation. At this time, the requirement to be fully vaccinated does not include the COVID vaccine. Visit the SPS website for more information.
