Community Campaign Co-Chairs Dr. Lauren and Rhett Brengarth address the crowd during kickoff event.

2024 Community Campaign Co-Chairs Dr. Lauren and Rhett Brengarth joined a crowd of Board members, staff, and supporters at Sentinel Park in Columbia’s Arcade District on Wednesday, August 28 to formally launch the 2024 Community Campaign to raise more than $3.075 million in support of our mid-Missouri communities.

“Today we begin our annual fundraising effort to remove barriers to quality education, financial stability, and affordable access to health and basic needs in our community,” said Mitzi Clayton, Board Chair at Heart of Missouri United Way.

“We are so thankful that our employers, Commerce Bank and the University of Missouri, as well as countless other employers are committed partners in this year’s campaign and have graciously supported our efforts to add value and impact for the communities we serve,” said Dr. Lauren Brengarth.

“Strong employer-led partnerships are the key as we steer campaign efforts this year,” Co-Chair Rhett Brengarth continued. “While this goal represents a substantial undertaking of generosity, it underscores the fact that unmet needs for our partners and community members is still magnitudes larger than what achieving this goal will provide.”

Love Columbia Executive Director Jane Williams explained the vital importance the community campaign brings serves for partnering agencies that receive United Way funding. “Giving generously through the community campaign ensures that families in mid-Missouri receive support that moves them to self-sufficiency through collaborative partnerships that identify gaps, provide resources, and develop skills.”

Machens Ford served as the presenting sponsor for the kickoff event which also featured a Hawthorn Bank sponsored lunch from Irene’s and live broadcast event by Clear99 radio.

The Change for Real Change effort provided opportunities for partner organizations to organize ‘penny wars’ competitions for team members and visitors to provide a visible reminder of the importance that even small gifts can create big community impacts. Approximately 40,000 pennies are needed to fill one water cooler bottle. When full of pennies, one water cooler bottle weighs approximately 220 pounds.

Thank you to all who came out and helped make our 2024 Community Campaign Kickoff a success! Please keep a lookout for water jugs at participating organizations and businesses around the community, where you can donate your spare change and be UNITED IN CHANGE with us!

United in Service: Loaned Executives

The Loaned Executive program maintains a long and storied tradition in the history of annual Community Campaigns. Sponsoring partners select high-performing professionals from within their ranks and loan them to United Way to serve for approximately five weeks in a coordinating role pivotal to the success of the campaign.

Loaned Executives connect with, support, and engage Community Campaign leaders at each business that sponsors a corporate campaign. They also meet with executives at prospective campaign organizations to foster new partnerships that benefit agencies supported by United Way. Many loaned executives from previous annual campaigns have gone on to serve as senior leaders within their employing organizations.

Join us in welcoming the 2024 Loaned Executives:

September Blog Post

In August, the Heart of Missouri United Way Board of Directors came together to finalize a critical decision for our community: the annual Community Campaign goal. This process was guided by three pressing questions

  • What are the most urgent needs in our local community?
  • How can United Way bridge the gap to support local nonprofits providing essential services?
  • With 98% of our revenue coming from local community support, will the community trust United Way again with their financial contributions?

With these questions in mind, the Board set an ambitious campaign goal of $3.075 million—an increase of 2.5% over last year. This decision recognizes the ongoing economic challenges faced by many in mid-Missouri, but also the overwhelming need that still exists.

Our discussion shifted to the staggering reality: local nonprofits are facing tens of millions in unmet needs. Last year, 1 in 5 mid-Missourians received support through Heart of Missouri United Way. Yet, even as we aim to raise $3.075 million, the needs of our community continue to grow.

Our latest round of Education grant requests submitted by nonprofits alone, which closed in August, totaled a record amount of over $1.3 million—on top of our current commitments in Health & Basic Needs and Financial Stability grants. This underscores the critical role United Way plays in ensuring that nonprofits have the resources to provide essential services. Our strategy grants help nonprofits address the biggest issues collectively and efficiently, making sure our community thrives.

The Board’s conclusion was clear: we must unite with our community to secure as much funding as possible. But our success isn’t measured solely by dollars raised. It’s about the impact those dollars have on improving lives and building a stronger future for mid-Missouri.

As we continue toward our campaign goal, I am proud of the Board’s commitment to defining success not just by how much we raise, but by how deeply we transform lives through our shared purpose. I hope our community will join us and make a gift to United Way. If you already donate, thank you! Together, we can truly be UNITED IN PURPOSE.

The Love Columbia Extra Mile program and Side by Side program each receive investments through financial stability impact grants funded by Heart of Missouri United Way.

The goal of Extra Mile is to reduce financial fragility and promote upward economic mobility among low-income individuals. This goal will be accomplished by providing instruction to increase financial literacy and giving opportunities to practice new financial skills. Participants will be further supported through help accessing available resources and, if needed, provided no interest loans to eliminate high interest debt.

The goal of Side By Side is to increase stability and general well-being and reduce isolation and inertia of low-income individuals in Columbia through access to community resources and social capital by offering individualized housing, employment, and life purpose coaching. Side By Side addresses the struggles many experience when facing barriers to employment and housing stability that prevent them from becoming financially self-sufficient.
