Opening Message

Happy September OOMPH students,

Our fall courses are now fully underway - I hope you are feeling excited and challenged by the material being covered! I remember my own graduate school days and that feeling of just continually being astounded by all the things I didn’t know I didn’t know. My wish is that each of you also experience that feeling and then use it to push yourselves to explore something new.

I have met many of you either over zoom during orientation or in-person during the summer visits this year, but I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself properly and tell you a bit more about the Food, Nutrition and Population Health (FNPH) concentration (formerly Public Health Nutrition), for which I am the faculty lead. I have been with FNPH (which we are trying very hard to coin as “Fun PH”. Ha!) since its 2022 inception when we welcomed our first official cohort in Fall of that year (many of whom will be graduating at the end of this semester!). We have grown so much in that short time, both in student number and in courses offered, and I feel proud and excited to be supporting this program and our public health nutrition enthusiasts. I teach Public Health Aspects of Maternal and Child Nutrition (PHW207A), being offered now, as well as Nutrition Assessment (PHW206A) and Diet and Chronic Disease (PHW290A) which are both offered in Spring. I love all things about nutrition and enjoy discussing all the ways it intersects with so many other fields (agriculture, health, economics, sociology…) I hope to see each of you in at least one of my courses during your time with OOMPH!

I know it is easy to get wrapped up in work and school obligations, but please take time this month to notice and enjoy the transition to fall and find something special to do to recognize Latinx Heritage Month, which is starting this week.

Warm regards,

Sarah Zyba
