2018 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Recipients
Ellis Island Honors Society annually presents the award to American citizens "who have distinguished themselves within their own ethnic groups while exemplifying the values of the American way of life." The Medal of Honor ranks among the nation's most prestigious awards, including Nobel Prize winners and six U.S. Presidents as past honorees.

Honorable Judge
Saba Sheibani
, 39, of San Diego, has been appointed to a judgeship in the San Diego County Superior Court. Since 2016, Judge Sheibani has been an Assistant Supervising Attorney at the San Diego County Public Defender's Office, where she has served as a Deputy Public Defender for over a decade. She was a law clerk at the San Mateo Private Defender Program in 2004. Judge Sheibani earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley. She fills the vacancy created by the elevation of Judge William S. Dato to the Court of Appeal.

Trained as an Electrical Engineer, Haleh Emrani has worked in the computer industry since 1991. She is the Founder and CEO of SageDom a team of mobile application developers with the goal of facilitating meaningful connections among people who share an interest, hobby, or activity. In 2005, she put her professional work on hold to attend graduate school at UCLA and received her PhD in 2011 in Near Eastern History, with a focus on social status of women in the Sassanian period. She is currently a Research Fellow at UCI, Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies. Passionate about philanthropy, Haleh is actively engaged in several non-profit organizations spanning cultural and educational causes, to children's welfare and music. She is the Chair of the Iranian Studies Council at Farhang Foundation, and a major supporter of Children Institute Inc. and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.

Nazee Moinian holds a Bachelor's degree in computer science, a Master's degree from Columbia University's School of International Affairs (SIPA), and a Master's degree in political science from Columbia University's School of Graduate Studies. She is currently working on her thesis examining Iran's foreign policy and its civil society. From 2001-2003, Nazee was a special envoy to the United Nations. She was also a consultant on Iran at the Council on Foreign Relations, where she interviewed foreign diplomats and acted as a liaison between Iranian political figures and their Western counter parts. She is the recipient of achievement and scholastic awards from both the Long Island University and Columbia University.

Shirindokht Nourmanesh is a creative writer, a fine artist, a literary translator and an independent researcher with a focus on symbolism in writings of Iranian women. A published author with two compilations of short stories, a poetry collection, and several fiction and non-fiction pieces, she is the Iranian editor for The Third Script, stories from Iran, Tasmania, & the UK. Shirindokht is the founder of the San Jose City College Middle Eastern Heritage Month, the co-founder of Red Chair Writing Workshop, and the co-founder of Gerdayesh, for the academic study of Shahnameh. She was the last director of the Association of Iranian American Writers & one of three jurists for the No to Censorship Contest.

Sunny Nassim is originally from Southern California and a partner at Jacobson, Russell, Saltz, Nassim & De la Torre LLP, a boutique Los Angeles-based law firm. Ms. Nassim advises clients in the areas of worldwide intellectual property rights & portfolio expansion, entertainment law, and business transactions. She works with television, film and new-media entertainers; athletes; and small, mid-level and publicly traded corporations. Ms. Nassim loves Southern California where the beach and mountains are always close by.
