Looking Ahead: Welcoming Father Elias Chacour
On Sunday, May 26, we will welcome Father Elias Chacour to the Fourth Church pulpit as our guest preacher at our 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. services.

Author of Blood Brothers and founder of Mars Elias University in the village of Ibillin in northern Israel, Father Chacour is internationally known for his work fostering peace and justice in Israel and Palestine through education.

This Sunday we continue our “Big Questions” sermon series, which over the course of two months will have us exploring topics that earlier this year you told us you hoped would be addressed in a sermon.

Our question this Sunday will be “Are we saved?”

Then on Sunday, May 19 we will wrestle with “How can we be church with differing political views?”

Come think about big questions with us!
This Sunday is your one-time opportunity to purchase a share of “stock” in our youth’s work in Detroit, New Jersey, and at the Presbyterian Youth Triennium this summer.

Specially designed shareholder certificates will be available for $10 each during Coffee Hour this Sunday only. Stop by and show your support of the work our youth will be doing this summer!

Another way to invest in our youth is to become an adult leader with our Youth Ministry program.

Youth Ministry leaders can choose from a variety of roles, whether helping junior and senior high Sunday morning fellowship groups, leading an eighth-grade Confirmation circle, chaperoning a retreat or lock-in, or coordinating special events such as fundraisers.

Want to learn more? Interested in helping prepare our young people to lead in the church and the world? Fill out the Youth Ministry Leader form by May 31.
Last Sunday we celebrated Care of Creation Sunday. This Saturday we have an opportunity to live out our stewardship of the earth by contributing to our annual Bike Drive.

We are again partnering with Working Bikes to collect used bicycles and bicycle parts. These bicycles and parts can be dropped off at the Delaware entrance to the Gratz Center between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. this Saturday, May 11.

The repaired bikes will then be sent on to Africa and Latin America as well as neighborhoods of Chicago, where they will offer a means of transportation to those who might not otherwise have one.
Another way to live out our call to care for creation is through involvement with the Chicago Lights Urban Farm.

This Saturday, May 11, you can get your plant starts at the Urban Farm (444 W. Chicago) between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Available plants and produce may include lettuce, spicy greens, kale, onions, peas, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, zinnias, nasturtiums, and more.

These plant starts are available for a recommended donation that supports the outreach of the Chicago Lights Urban Farm, which is dedicated to cultivating a thoughtful and engaged community of youth and adults through educational and economic opportunities, hands-on learning experiences, and access to fresh, local, and sustainably grown produce.

The Farm also has limited space open for community gardeners this growing season. If you are interested in community gardening at the Urban Farm, advance registration is required as well as participation in an orientation next Saturday, May 18.
Are you aware that Fourth Church posts Fourth Church and Chicago Lights employment opportunities on our website and on Facebook?

Among the current openings that you will find on our Job Openings page is the recently posted Director of Operational Ministries, a position that is a perfect match for someone with logistical skill, business acumen, a desire to serve, and the ability to provide daily oversight, ensuring that all operational functions deliver results and support and advance the plans and goals of Fourth Church and Chicago Lights.

Even if you are not looking for employment at present, we hope you will periodically review the openings.

Then if you know of someone who would be a good fit for ministry with Fourth Church and Chicago Lights—and who wants to work for an organization voted one of Chicago’s Top Workplaces each of the past three years—please encourage them to apply!
Many members and friends of Fourth Church have chosen to remember this congregation in their estate plans. In grateful recognition of that deep commitment to the church’s future mission and ministry, we have created the Fourth Church Legacy Society.

Becoming a member of the Legacy Society is a wonderful way to leave a legacy of love for the next generation and to ensure that Fourth Church will always be a part of our future.

To learn more about the Legacy Society, stop by Coffee Hour this Sunday as we prepare for “Leave a Legacy” Sunday on May 19. You can also sign up to receive periodic emails and updates from the Legacy Society.

This coming Friday come show your support for Tower Brass and the Fourth Church Choral Society while enjoying some wonderful music!
