Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ to the three Wise Men, and by extension to all of us. More generally, epiphany means “a striking appearance, or revelation, or coming suddenly into view.” How is Christ shining forth in this century? How can we see the incarnation in current events? Join Barb and Paul Laymon to discuss epiphanies in 2023, using the miracle stories in John as a scriptural basis. This week, we consider justice and the work of EDOW’s Task Force on Reparations, which was commissioned by Bishop Budde to help the diocese “recognize, wrestle with, and attempt to make restitution for its history and participation in white supremacy and anti-Black racism ….” Please join us in person or via Zoom for this timely presentation and discussion.

Grab your Brews!

The growlers are back! Take home a growler (or two!) of your brew crew's finest, available after services on Sunday. Pouring our favorite "St. Paul" porter, a nice IPA, and (yes, still!) a nice Okoberfest lager.

Outreach: Service to the Community

How to help our January Outreach Recipient: Good Neighbors

  • Donate to our Outreach fund. All January donations will be directed to Good Neighbors of Capitol Hill. Whether your donation is $20 (rice or flour for a month) or $500 (a laptop for school or job searching,) your gift provides a lifeline to families starting their lives over in a new country. GNCH is an all volunteer organization which relies heavily on goodwill donations of furniture and appliances from our neighbors and partner faith organizations, but some items simply must be purchased new. 100 percent of all financial donations are used directly for refugee families.
  • Attend the fundraising concert by Second String Orchestra on Saturday, January 28, 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s. The Orchestra includes talented string instrumentalists from our neighborhood, including several members of CC+WP, and will feature guest musician, Hamid Habibzadah, playing the tabla. Tickets can be purchased at the door or reserved by contacting GNCH ($20 per person or $40 per family is requested.) A reception will follow the concert in thanks to the community of friends and neighbors who have so generously supported GNCH's efforts.
  • Volunteer to help stuff backpacks or set up apartments for incoming refugees. See Lisa Nickerson or Andrea Harles for information on how you can get involved or contact Good Neighbors directly.
  • Enjoy coffee and a treat during both coffee hours this week in celebration of our work with GNCH - feel free to ask how to get more involved!

Thank you to the Men's Group

Last Saturday, St. Mark's and Christ Church hosted a breakfast for the Stanikzais and other Afghan families we have met this past year, and for the volunteers, donors, and interested friends who have helped support these families. We are especially thankful to the CC+WP Mens Group for flipping pancakes and scrambling eggs; Kim Bayliss of St Mark's, who organized the event; and to many CC+WP and St Mark's parishioners who helped and/or joined us. Contact Sherry Saunders if you want more information about our support for Afghan Refugee Families through our partnership with St Mark's.

Donations and volunteers needed for arriving migrants

Coats, shoes, clothing, and blankets are needed in all sizes and for all genders. Bring new or lightly used items clean, bagged and labeled - by contents and sizes - to St. Mark's from Monday-Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. for distribution through the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network. Find out more about supporting migrants, or sign up to help sort donations.
