PHA 2023 State of Population Health Event
PHA held its “State of Population Health” forum on January 19th to address important issues and trends facing multi-stakeholder population health improvement organizations and to set the agenda for the coming year. We discussed the latest market trends, CMMI priorities, Medicaid redetermination challenges and solutions, delivery system outlook for VBC, and advancing primary care and homecare. PHA welcomes Melissa Clarke as its newest Board Member
PHA is pleased to announce that Melissa Clarke, MD, CMQ, has been elected to its esteemed Board of Directors.

"PHA continues to attract outstanding leaders to our Board of Directors and know that Dr. Melissa Clarke will be a high contributing member to the PHA Board, strategic direction, and our support of members to make transformative contributions to the industry,” said PHA Chairman Emeritus Rose Maljanian and Chairman & CEO HealthCAWS.
Dr. Clarke is Chief Population Health Officer, Healthcare Transformation and Health Equity
Regulatory and Payer Solutions at 3M Health Information Systems (HIS), embedded in regulatory and government affairs group. She provides clinical thought leadership in population health and value-based payment initiatives, supporting the transition to a health care delivery system that rewards high quality, lower cost and equitable care.

Her extensive background in health care transformation comes from former roles as vice president for population health at a D.C. based independent physician’s association. Prior to that she was senior medical director at Aetna-owned Active Health Management and board chair of Unity Healthcare, the largest federally qualified health center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Clarke has led or consulted on implementations of health-equity informed population health programs that include a telehealth, precision medicine, pharmacist led medication management and care coordination for Medicaid beneficiaries.
 
PHA Welcomes Jennifer Arigo as its Executive Director
PHA welcomes Jennifer Arigo, MBA, CAE as its new Executive Director. Jennifer comes to PHA with over 20 years of healthcare association experience, most of which have been in senior leadership roles expanding membership, building strategic partnerships, and increasing revenue.

Most recently, Jennifer served as the Executive Director of the GW Ron & Joy Paul Kidney Center where she partnered with D.C.'s Department of Aging and Community Living and other civic organizations and non-profit healthcare associations to conduct over twenty-five hundred free health screenings to at risk populations in Washington, D.C. Prior to her time with GW, Jennifer served as the Executive Director of the Maryland Nurses Association where she increased membership and the operating revenue by nearly twenty percent. Jennifer also served as Executive Director of the American Nurses Association's Individual Member Division where she doubled the membership and created four new Constituent/State Nurses Associations across the country.

Jennifer holds a B.A. from The Catholic University of America, an M.B.A. from Strayer University, and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). Jennifer is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Healthcare Administration from Capella University with a concentration in Leadership.

“I am excited to bring my knowledge of association management and passion for healthcare to PHA with the goal of expanding membership and creating strategic partnerships to take PHA to the next level. Given the critical importance of healthcare in today's society, especially post COVID, PHA's multi stakeholder platform is the premier Association to shape the health and well-being of the consumer across the continuum of care.” said Jennifer Arigo, PHA Executive Director.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Policy Solutions Could Lower Health Care Costs by $767 Billion

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) released policy solutions that could reduce health care costs in the United States by $767 billion over 10 years. The recommendations, Affordability Solutions for the Health of America, address the root causes of rising health care costs by improving competition, lowering prescriptions. Read full story.
Eyenuk Secures the First European Union MDR Certification for Autonomous AI Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, and Glaucoma

Eyenuk has been approved to market its EyeArt® AI eye screening system in the European Union for the new uses of detecting age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucomatous optic nerve damage (a sign of glaucoma). The approval allows Eyenuk’s AI eye screening system, already approved for detection of diabetic retinopathy, to aid millions of additional patients at risk for vision loss.

3M and Discovery Education are launching the Young Scientist Challenge Alumni Network and Alumni Grants Program. The effort will support past participants and the future science leaders as part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. As the nation’s premier middle school science competition, the annual 3M Young Scientist Challenge invites students in grades 5-8 to compete for a mentorship with a 3M scientist, a $25,000 grand prize and the chance to earn the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” The new Alumni Network and Alumni Grants Program offers previous participants networking opportunities, resources, events, and funding for existing science projects. Read full story.
Novartis presents pivotal Phase III APPLY-PNH data at ASH demonstrating investigational oral monotherapy iptacopan superiority over anti-C5
 
Novartis announced detailed results from the pivotal Phase III APPLY-PNH trial1. The results showed a vast majority of patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) who received the investigational oral monotherapy iptacopan achieved clinically meaningful increases in hemoglobin levels compared to anti-C5 therapy1. The study met both primary endpoints and most secondary endpoints, with iptacopan demonstrating superiority over anti-C5 therapy in adult patients with PNH experiencing residual anemia despite prior treatment with anti-C5 therapy1. Geisinger Study Reveals People with additional X or Y chromosome at increased risk for dangerous blood clots

Geisinger recently released study results in JAMA involving people with an additional X or Y chromosome. The study found that a genetic condition known as supernumerary sex chromosome aneuploidy—have an increased risk of developing blood clots known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), Read full story.
CareOregon is Building a stronger Rockwood: Why they're investing in after-hours crisis support through New Avenues for Youth

CareOregon is making major investments in the Rockwood community, including supporting New Avenues for Youth with a $50,000 grant to hire an additional After-hours Crisis Services Coordinator in Rockwood. This staff person will provide immediate crisis intervention and stabilization for youth ages 9-17 who are accessing emergency housing and shelter services, among other resources. Read full story.

Jefferson Names John P. Mordach New Chief Financial Officer of Jefferson Health and Thomas Jefferson University

Jefferson’s CEO Joseph G. Cacchione, MD is pleased to announce that John P. Mordach, has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Jefferson, which consists of Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Health and Health Partners Plans. Effective March 20, 2023, Mordach will join the organization from Duke University Health System (DUHS) where he served as Senior Vice President, CFO and Treasurer for the $4.5 billion academic health system since 2020. University Hospitals Awarded for Exceptional Cardiovascular Care of Patients Undergoing Cancer Treatment

University Hospitals (UH) Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute has been awarded a Center of Excellence designation by the International Cardio-Oncology Society in recognition of its ongoing support of cancer patients facing heart issues. This Gold Status certification, the society’s highest designation, recognizes the institute for its commitment to cardiology services for cancer patients in whom life-saving treatments may cause cardiac problems. This innovative cardio-oncology program, founded in 2013, is a collaboration between UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute and UH Seidman Cancer Center.
The American College of Lifestyle Medicine and Humana Commit to Lifestyle medicine Training for Healthcare Professionals

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) and Humana have announced a new partnership to provide lifestyle medicine training for healthcare professionals contracted by Humana. The commitment by Humana to encourage its clinicians to take advantage of the complimentary education courses will support ACLM’s $22 million pledge highlighted at the recent White House Conference on Hunger, Health, and Nutrition to provide continuing medical education courses to up to 100,000 healthcare professionals. The partnership with Humana represents the largest organizational commitment to promote lifestyle medicine training to date. Read full story.
The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors' Thought Leader Round Table: Mental Health and Chronic Disease Prevention

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors’ Thought Leader Round Table on Mental Health convened 20 NACDD staff and consultants, Subject Matter Experts, Chronic Disease Directors, and national partners in Washington, D.C. to explore the role of State Chronic Disease Directors and others to address mental health issues impacting states working in chronic disease. Thought Leaders identified nine key priority recommendations to inform efforts by Chronic Disease Directors, national partners, and NACDD. As the need for action on mental health issues impacting states increases, it is essential to implement innovative approaches for collective action on mental health issues as chronic disease professionals. Centivo’s 2022 Healthcare Spend Analysis Reveals 21 to 33 Percent Cost Savings for Employers

Centivo announced key findings from its 2022 healthcare spend analysis derived from the Company’s flagship Partnership Plan offering. Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Redesignated As Acute Stroke Ready Hospital

Franciscan Health Olympia Fields has been redesignated as an Acute Stroke Ready hospital by the Illinois Department of Public Health, the hospital announced today.

Mars Australia wins outstanding achievement award for recycled content in packaging
 
Mars Australia has been recognized as a leader in sustainable packaging, winning the prize for Outstanding Achievement for Recycled Content as part of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organization's annual awards in Sydney. The national awards recognize progress in packaging design and innovation and celebrate businesses that have gone ‘above and beyond’ to implement sustainability practices within their industry.
