Emergency Response Infrastructure Project in FY23 Omnibus Funding Secured by Congressman Simpson

Shoshone, Idaho, home to over 5,300 residents, needs more direct access to comprehensive care in the event of a medical emergency. Thanks to efforts by the County Commissioners, the city of Shoshone, and Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson, this is coming to fruition.

Congressman Simpson secured $1,550,000 in funding for the Family Health Services Helipad and Ambulance Bay infrastructure project, which was included in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill through Community Project Funding (CPF). Concurrently, the Commissioners and the city of Shoshone agreed to lease the land for the new clinic. Then on February 6, Congressman Simpson highlighted the project's inclusion in the FY23 Omnibus package signed into law on December 29, 2022.

The Family Health Services Helipad and Ambulance Bay infrastructure project funding supports the construction of a helipad and four-unit ambulance bay that will be attached to the new Family Health Services (FHS) Community Health Center.

"The helipad and ambulance bay will greatly expedite access to emergency care for this very rural part of Idaho that serves as a conduit to the popular Sun Valley Area. This project will create a robust health services network capable of yielding positive outcomes and reducing health disparities often inherent in rural communities where distance limits response and transport time in medical emergencies," said Simpson.

Gender Affirming Care for Minors

By Mike Cunnington (IMA Legislative Report - Feb. 10, 2023)

IMA recently highlighted the introduction of HB 71 by Rep. Bruce Skaug (R-Nampa), which would criminalize gender affirming care (GAC) for transgender minors by making it a felony to provide surgery, hormone therapy or puberty blockers.

On February 7, HB 71 received a hearing in the House Judiciary Committee. For nearly two hours, the committee heard testimony on both sides from around the state. Several IMA members participated in opposition to the bill, while others like Dr. Marvin Alviso were not given an opportunity to testify.

The committee also heard firsthand stories from multiple parents sharing the anguish of watching their children struggle with severe mental health issues – including suicidality – prior to treatment.

Just as in 2022, the legislation passed along party lines with a 14-3 vote. HB 71 was sent to the full House with a do pass recommendation, and it passed the House on a 58-12 floor vote on February 14. The IMA Lobby Team will continue working with our physician members to oppose HB 71 and combat misinformation around GAC.
