CFHS Jazz One to Perform at

The 76th Midwest Clinic

Cedar Falls High School Jazz One, directed by Kyle Engelhardt, has been chosen to perform at The 76th Midwest Clinic on December 20, 2022, at McCormick Place West in Chicago, Illinois. Being selected is one of the highest honors any school ensemble can achieve.

The Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra conference, annually hosts more than 18,000 participants from 50 states and over 40 countries. Concert performances are given by more than 50 outstanding musical organizations from around the world.

CFHS Jazz One is one of only three high school jazz bands in the United States selected to perform in 2022. The last time an Iowa band was chosen for this elite honor was in 1993. Performing at The Midwest Clinic is an incredible opportunity.

CFHS Jazz One will perform with two guest artists on their program: tenor saxophonist Chris Merz, the director of Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Iowa; and Chicago trumpet player Marques Carroll, jazz trumpet instructor at the University of Illinois-Chicago and leader of the Marques Carroll Quintet, which recently released two albums. Jazz One will perform music by Iowa composers Bob Washut, Mike Conrad, and Steve Shanley, as well as five other composers from across the US. Additionally, one of the selections chosen for the program was published by C.L. Barnhouse Company, a music publishing company in Oskaloosa, Iowa. CFHS Jazz One is honored to represent their city, county, and state at an international level.

“It is a dream come true,” said Kyle Engelhardt, CFHS Jazz One director. “Earning a performance spot at The Midwest Clinic is an incredible honor, and I am so proud of these students. It’s recognition for our program of sustained excellence over time, and we are excited to represent our state. We’ve had a lot of fun rehearsing this fall, working with the composers of our pieces, and preparing for our guest soloists. The performance in Chicago will be a memory our students will never forget.”

Generous financial support has been provided by the R. J. McElroy Trust, CF Schools Foundation, the Iowa Arts Council - a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, Hawkeye Stages, West Music, Tenor Madness Custom Tenor Saxophones, Bach Brass, University of Northern Iowa School of Music, C&J Travel, and CF Band Boosters.

Congratulations to Laura Englehardt, Holmes Junior High band teacher, she was awarded the Phillip Sehmann Excellence in Education Award, Middle School level, from the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters' Association. The Phillip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award is given in memory of Mr. Phillip Sehmann, who had a highly distinguished career as Director of Bands at Crestwood Community Schools. The individuals recognized display the qualities of excellence, dedication, and commitment to the value of instrumental music education in our schools, and this award is considered the highest honor we bestow on our fellow NEIBA members.
