From Fr. Mike

Today is Fathers’ Day, when we honor all fathers and those who give us fatherly love.

This day is special to me because my father will be 94 on his birthday this coming August 1st. I know how blessed I am.

In honoring dads and those who show us “fatherly love”, I would like to suggest something. If your dad is like mine and many other fathers, they are men of very few words. They don’t talk much about their feelings. But dads do have feelings and emotions, and they can handle yours, so tell your dad what he means to you.

My dad, in many ways, took after his father, my grandfather - this is often true of many men. They have a sense of duty, structure, and responsibility. They always tried to do the right thing. They might seem to be very serious guys, but usually have a smile ready and a sense of humor to share. . .They help provide for the family by working endless hours. They teach by example, and even today, I learn much from watching my father.

I know I am truly blessed, for both my dad and mom were a great team. I know he grieves my mom’s death, but when he sees us, he puts all that aside for us. Dad may be a man of a few words, but no one could ever doubt the love he has for his family.

So why not tell your dad on this day what he means to you? You can whisper it in a prayer, shout it out from the rooftops, or write it in a card.

Happy Father’s Day!!!!!

Mary Clare Barker's Retirement Celebration

A permanent smile is the prize for having a successful celebration. Well, I can tell you firsthand that St. Gertrude’s has left a permanent smile on Mary Clare Barker’s face.

What a joyful celebration we had last Sunday! Thank you to the choir, cantors, musicians, and all of you for a spirit-filled farewell for Mary Clare. Pictures of the 10:30 am Mass are below.

Our Parish Composting Program is Back!

All are welcome to be a part of our parish composting program! Those who join our program are welcome to use the parish’s compost tumbler, a user-friendly option that will produce compost at a quicker pace.

This year, we request that composters make sure that they only add small and chopped up waste—not whole banana peels, large slices of watermelon, etc.

This is because if we want to have compost product this summer, then we need to insert chopped up pieces into the composter or it will be years before it degrades.

If you are interested in joining our composting program, please reach out to our new compost garden coordinators, Andrea and Guy Banicki at anbanicki@gmail.com or gbanick@ilstu.edu for information about the fee.

Participants this summer can use their own compost buckets.

Growing in Faith

On Father’s Day I often think of St. Joseph. The man had a tough assignment - he was the “step-father” of Jesus Christ, Son of God.

He must have had a lot of faith to have accepted this role, it seems, without question. I mean, the whole thing had to be quite a shock to him with his young wife pregnant but not by him and then having to ramble across the desert, she on the back of a donkey, and he on foot leading, looking out for Herod and bandits, and scorpions and whatever. And then fathering the young boy, protecting him, teaching him his craft, putting food on the table, maybe tucking him in at night telling him a story.

It's poignant somehow that Joseph is barely mentioned in the Gospels. We see him at the birth, and once more perhaps and then - he’s gone. What happened to him? Most likely, he had already died, just as most men will before their wives do. And he’s not at the crucifixion.

Perhaps this was best. For he loved his son, and his heart would have surely broken in half to see his boy suffer and die in such a way.

So here’s to you, Joseph, on this Father’s Day! I suppose stepfather is a fitting descriptor for you because you stepped up in a big way when you were needed. You loved and took care of your family, worked hard, and didn’t ask for much. And when the story was written you didn’t get much credit which, I have a feeling, didn’t matter much to you. You did your job.

Thank You for Supporting the Baby & Toddler Supply Collection for Asylum Seekers at Ismaili Jamatkhana Center

Thank you to those who were able to make donations to the baby and toddlers collection on Saturday, June 10 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm at the Ismaili Jamatkhana Center.

A full van load of supplies was sent to Care for Real and two car loads went to Centro Romero, full of diapers, wipes, formula, baby food, baby and toddler clothes, medication, and roller bags. Another car load was delivered to the Latino Treatment Center. All items were for newly arrived asylum seekers.

A special thanks to all volunteers who worked so hard to collect donations and organize supplies! (Pictured: Volunteers from the Ismaili Jamatkhana Center.)

This donation drive was coordinated by Sacred Heart, Ismaili Civic, the Church of the Atonement, and St. Gertrude.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, September 13.

Please be on the lookout for an update in the bulletin of current ministries.

A Note from Eloy Escamilla, Pastoral Associate

Dear Community of St. Gertrude,

I just want to share with you that I will be away from the

parish until June 27. I want to take this time for a retreat as I am walking “El Camino” to Santiago the

Compostela.

Please, keep me in your prayers so I can have a nice

encounter with God.
