March 2023

Dear Colleagues,

First, we want to congratulate two of our Department of Medicine colleagues on their first NIH R01 grants. This is a major accomplishment and milestone that we should celebrate! Second, in honor of Women's History Month, UCSF Profiles highlights hundreds of women faculty, trainee, and staff scientists – many from DOM – who are essential contributors to our research mission. Finally, in this issue we are also sharing the announcement that UCSF will be holding its 2nd annual symposium for the Multiethnic Health Equity Research Center with Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo as the keynote speaker. And check out the funding opportunities section.

All the best,

Diane and David

PRE-Proposal Application REview Program

DOM PREPARE Program

Requests for grant reviews are accepted on an ongoing basis

Check out what our faculty have to say about their experience with this program:

"This is an excellent program, especially for junior faculty like me. The registration and organization of this program were very smooth and easy to navigate. Importantly, the review of my K proposal was high quality and I got very helpful suggestions to improve my proposal. I am deeply grateful for my reviewers and people who helped to coordinate this review." - Nhung Nguyen, PhD, Division of General Internal Medicine and Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education

Funding Opportunities

SOM One-Time Funding to Cover Costs of New Collective Bargaining Agreements

The School of Medicine Dean's Office and the Chancellor/Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) are developing approaches to address the short- and long-term challenges facing our research and education programs.

As an immediate measure funding will be provided to address extraordinary cost increases generated by the collective bargaining agreements through September of 2024. They hope this solution will provide some relief and time for PIs to develop individual plans for their own research groups.

  • Each principal investigator will receive $12,000 per postdoctoral scholar, for up to three scholars.
  • Each principal investigator and/or program will receive $2,400 for each basic sciences graduate student.
  • Support for social sciences graduate students will be addressed at a later date.
  • The UAW-negotiated salary increase for Academic Research Staff aligns with current and planned increases for faculty and non-represented staff, so no additional support will be provided, and these expenses remain with individual principal investigators/programs.
