President's Message
Happy New Year!
May you have good health, happiness, and peace.  As we start this new year, I’d like to ask ALL members to help us shape ALL's future.

As it did with everything, COVID caused some flux and change for ALL. We have had to grow in new directions. One of our new members commented that we should be proud of surviving the pandemic, a lot of organizations did not. We are proud and did survive because the board of directors, coordinators, and members would not let ALL disappear. We have had to adapt, of course, but we are up and running with in-person classes again, as well as ZOOM and now hybrid classes. However, we need our ALL members to help us shape the future. Where will we go next? How do we stay current and viable as an organization? Who will lead us?

So, I’m asking you to continue to take courses and spread the word to family, friends, and neighbors. Give them our website address:  www.capecodall.org
so they can see who we are, peruse our catalog and sign up for a class or two. Become a desk volunteer; it’s another way to meet people and learn more about our organization. Send an email to
stating that you’d like to volunteer for the desk or one of our committees: special events, hospitality, nominating committee, long range planning, finance, communication, technology, policy and procedures, or registration. Run for the board of directors. Put your knowledge, interests, and expertise to work for ALL. Lastly, share your ideas and concerns – that’s how we grow. Our future is bright if you will help to shape it.

Shaping ALL's Future Through Communication
This continues an ongoing series of stories about Academy for Lifelong Learning coordinators and classes. Please let us know If you have a course or coordinator you would like to see featured.
Coordinator Joan Freedman has been a Cape Cod "Washashore" for 12 years. With degrees in education, psychology, and administration, she has been involved in local politics, women’s causes, charitable work, and many other volunteer activities including ALL to enrich her “retirement” years.

Joan was busy during the fall. She coordinated a course to "Welcome Washashores" and interviewed ALL members and coordinators on podcasts and video-casts at the Cape Cod Media Center. You will find links to a video at the end of this article. Additional interviews are scheduled for release during 2023.
The Fall semester of 2022 was our first semester back in person. The College had Covid precautions in place but there were several generalized fears. One was that being back in the classroom would lead to further Covid breakouts. Another fear was that holding continued classes on Zoom would be socially isolating. Both those fears have vanished. There was no “super-spreader” breakout in class and all instructors reported engaging classes with fluid, productive conversations.  Once again, the importance of community and connection became clear.

The Spring 2023 semester looks to be even more exciting. ALL now has three communication platforms on which to offer classes: 1.) in-class, 2.)Zoom, and 3.)hybrid via our D-Ten apparatus. Our members and instructors have choices of how they would like to teach and learn. We believe this is the way to the future; combining old and new teaching methodologies to create many varied learning environments to move our members forward in their goals of self-exploration and fulfillment.

As noted, communication and connection are key to all things related to ALL, and new technologies are changing how we communicate. Social media and podcasting are becoming the “Go-to” methods of communicating, advertising, socializing and entertaining. I experienced this first hand when I took on the task of connecting the ALL Communications Committee with the Cape Cod Media Center. This was followed by the challenges of learning to pod and video cast as well as setting up interviews with our very talented coordinators. The people I have met and the wonderful stories they shared with me have made these months memorable and rewarding.

This month please watch our new video cast which features New Coordinators Carol Coteus and Joe Dwelly, edited by Jean DeVincentis. Paul Coteus, ALL’s vice-president, introduces the organization and explains how he and Carol broadcasted a cooking class from their home. Joe explains his subject matter, The Butterflies of Cape Cod. Both Carol and Joe talked about the members in their classes; Carol on Zoom and Joe in person, and how both venues led to conversations and learning. We have podcasts coming through the winter that spotlight new Coordinators, their backgrounds and inspirations for their very interesting, first-time-offered courses.

Looking into the future, we are looking to broaden our message and expand our use of digital media. Please follow us on our Facebook page. Also, please listen to our podcasts and video casts. The easiest way to find our podcasts and videos is on our website at capecodall.org/media-productions..

We need your suggestions and your vision for the future ALL. Please contact me through the ALL office, 774-330-4400, if you have a message that you would like to spread or an interview you would like to suggest I look forward to hearing from you.

Carol Coteus and Joe Dwelly video:

Please take a look at A.L. L.’s new video cast edited by Jean DeVincentis.  It features new Coordinators Carol Coteus and Joe Dwelly.

Our Vice-President Paul Coteus introduces A.L.L. to our audience and plays an important role in Carol’s class. Carol is Coordinating “Chef for a Day”, which she and Paul filmed in their kitchen. Joe is Coordinating “Butterflies Across Cape Cod”.

Please listen to what inspired them in their subject matter, and how they interact with their students both in person (Joe) and on Zoom (Carol). See the link below.t)i "only 7 remaining!"
A Plan For The Future
Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (BenThe Academy for Lifelong Learning's mission is to be a welcoming volunteer community where people 50+ can pursue educational opportunities & social relationships through classes & events. Given all the changes that have happened over the last three years, the board felt it was time to develop a new strategic plan. To that end we invited Marc Goldberg from SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) to lead an all day retreat for us. We also invited a sampling of members (some new this semester, others with membership as long as ten to twenty years). At the retreat we worked on the first steps in developing a plan of action by identifying the most important issues we face as an organization. More about this effort will be described in follow-up newsletters along with ways you may be asked to participate.
