FMLink Weekly News Digest I June 13, 2023
Just starting out in your facility management career? Little to no experience in the field? You have a firm interest within this industry but don’t really know where to start or know how to gain momentum toward the success you want? If so, this Skills Guide was made for you — the FM that is new to the industry but very eager to get started and ready to make an impression.

Many professionals fall into the facility management industry by accident. Unfortunately, there isn’t too much information available tailored specifically to the new facility manager with no official experience. No descriptions on what to expect or how to achieve success. For many, being thrown into the fire and tossed to the sharks is the only approach. While this can be an effective strategy, it’s not for everyone. For those new to the industry, or even those who still feel new after years on the job, this is the guidebook for you. Through articles and videos, industry consultant Charles M. Thomas details 10 must-have skills to become a stand-out facility manager.

Commercial interiors event NeoCon has announced the winners of the 33rd annual Best of NeoCon Awards. The highly esteemed program recognizes products from industry-leading companies that demonstrate unparalleled innovation and design-forward thinking. Selected by a distinguished jury of architects, designers, specifiers, enterprise clients, facility managers and top business media, each of the entries was evaluated on-site in the days leading up to the show. A total of 114 awards were bestowed upon products in more than 50 categories for Gold, Silver, Sustainability, Innovation, Business Impact, and the coveted Best of Competition honors. This year, the Flote Lounge Collection from Hightower (Showroom 1110) received the distinction of Best of Competition.

“The solutions unveiled during this year’s Best of NeoCon reflect the expanded and increasingly diverse range of needs of today’s offices, schools, hotels, restaurants, retail, public space, and healthcare facilities,” remarks Eileen McMorrow of The McMorrow Reports, Best of NeoCon Competition Director since its inception in 1990. “From products designed to promote relaxation and well-being, to solo work pods and acoustic solutions well-suited for concentration and focused work, to collaboration collections for intentional team tasks, this year’s winning products enhance the built environment and contribute to a more balanced user experience.”

Just like workplaces, education campuses are in the ongoing process of digital transformation. It is an exciting time not just for students, but for campus facility managers, too. Though educational institutions may traditionally be slow on the uptake of technology and new systems, that momentum is accelerating.

Higher education leaders are acutely aware of students’ ever-rising expectations: they want a campus that embraces new systems and technologies to facilitate seamless movement throughout campuses, or access to the resources on a needs basis — all while being more collaborative and safer. Campus FMs are focusing on digital transformation to reshape teaching, learning, and the campus. With the success that many future-facing private organizations have achieved post-pandemic, can this success be replicated within the educational environment?

The design-build industry has every incentive to stop contributing to landfills, to question conventional construction methods, and to limit damaging emissions because its leadership cares about the future of our planet and humans’ well-being. Fortunately, FreeAxez designed Gridd with the goal of creating a system that would be long-lasting and reusable. The low-profile raised floor and cable management system is made from steel, one of the most durable materials available, has minimal components and is infinitely reusable.

Gridd® by FreeAxez is a low-profile raised floor and cable management system that counters construction’s negative impact and makes a positive difference. Gridd was created with the goal of remaining in use forever — easily relocated, reconfigured or repurposed — and never being discarded into a landfill. FreeAxez commissioned The McMorrow Reports to research and write the paper, The Circular Economy of Gridd®: How to Deliver the Power to Change.

This paper explores the circularity of Gridd as considered under the ISO 59.010 Standard: Circular Economy. A case study is presented that compares a project with conventional wiring and cable management (with wires and cables above ceilings and embedded in walls) to a project that uses Gridd, with the goal of illustrating how Gridd is not only a circular product, but also is an alternative to other cabling methods because of the potentially smaller carbon footprint for installation.

This week's Featured Book from FMLink's new Books section is from the Engineering category. This collection of peer-reviewed books has been curated by the editorial team at FMLink to provide facilities, engineering and A&D professionals with access to publications relating to the Engineering topic.

The Engineering Guide to LEED-New Construction provides a solid understanding of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED-NC rating system, explaining step-by-step how to apply it to real-world construction projects.

This much-needed reference offers practical discussions of the main concepts of sustainability, and also presents detailed equations and exercises that can be used to perform the calculations outlined in LEED-NC.

As technologies become more targeted and sophisticated, it is clear that a single cloud product cannot meet all of an agency's needs. A multi–cloud environment represents a highly individualized, fluid approach to capitalizing on everything cloud has to offer. The latest Innovation in Government report from FCW (The Business of Federal Technology) explores how agencies can be more strategic in their approach to building and managing multi-cloud environments. Making the Most of Multi-Cloud is sponsored by Carahsoft, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, Oracle, Red Hat and VMware. Topic coverage includes:
  • How the mission drives multi-cloud success
  • Choosing the right cloud tool for the job
  • Seamlessly embracing a multi-cloud environment
  • The move to multi-cloud by default
  • A smarter approach to cloud adoption

Wooster Products, an industry leader in anti-slip safety stair treads and walkway products, recently unveiled a new website. This helpful resource for architects, specifiers and others provides a fast and easy way to find information on code-compliant non-slip stair treads and nosings, emergency egress systems, and more. The site contains information on products for new construction and renovation projects in an intuitive, easy-to-navigate format.

On the site, users can quickly learn about NITEGLOW glow-in-the-dark products, said to be the only anti-slip products with photoluminescent properties in the grit for long-lasting safety. Two-part replaceable nosings, which feature a wooden slat that is replaced with the non-slip sections just before the building is turned over — thus providing unrivaled aesthetics and durability — are also prominently featured. Alumogrit cast nosings for long-lasting anti-slip protection and Stairmaster treads and nosings for new construction and renovation projects are also detailed, as are Flex-Tred anti-slip tape in rolls or die-cut for OEM applications.
