- Put garden to bed for the winter, check.

- Give thanks for a spectacular fall and no mosquito summer, check
Our District work is done for this year, with only one Flower Show; a Steering Committee and President’s Meeting; and a quarterly report left to do. This has been an extraordinary year. As a District we were able to work together for our first in-person Michigan Garden Club Annual Meeting, the first in three years. We weren’t exactly sure what to expect, but we sure did pull off a great, fun-filled and heavily attended event. Amid pulling this June event together, Howell Garden Club pulled together a Fall District Meeting that set a high standard for District Meetings. Howell was concerned that they did not have enough resources to host a District Meeting. However, I’ve discovered the phrase “Hard to Do” just doesn’t exist in our garden clubs. They gave us a well-organized and marvelously decorated Fall Meeting. Our District has developed a rotation schedule to remove the stress from just one group creating the meetings. Each District Meeting is arranged and themed differently. Every club has members with imagination, skills and talent. Creativity is the name of the game.
What We’ve Learned:
No matter what the circumstances, District 2B Garden Clubs have what it takes to invite others into their group. We’ve gone through a global pandemic and come out the other side learning how to use the newest technology, how to use the District 2B Steering Committee and Presidents to put a team effort to work.
A garden club is not on its own. Our District shares the proceeds from these meetings, the club receives a portion, and the rest goes to the Michigan Garden Club. The money that stays within the district is part of the savings we have as a backup fund to cover any shortfall we might have on future events. We also learned that holding joint District Spring Leadership meetings with the next District that holds the Annual Conference, relieves the pressure for one District and enriches the hosting District. We meet new MGC members and learn about their programs.
What We are Looking Forward to:
Next year, the Steering Committee will host a Spring Leadership Meeting in the Lansing area and we have invited District 4 (they are hosting the 2023 MGC Annual Conference) to join us. Clubs will help in picking 2-3 “areas of pain” topics to cover in the round table discussions. Club Presidents have been given the summary of the 2021 discussions and identified areas that leadership finds challenging or needing improvement. It is recommended that we select topics related to that summary. I hope Clubs will encourage club officers and potential officers to attend the April 25, 2023 event. I am looking forward to the Spring Leadership Meeting and our Fall District Meeting.
We have so much to work with THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!
Your District Director,
Carol Grainger

Marshall Area Garden Club
Marshall Area Garden Club, Inc. celebrates it’s
35th Anniversary this year!
Janet Schoenmeyer started the Marshall Area Garden Club, Inc. (MAGCI) in 1987 by placing an ad in the local Marshall paper and inviting people interested in starting a gardening club to her home for that initial club meeting. From that first year with 9 members, the club has since grown to over 90 members and accomplished many community beautification projects throughout the years. The club meets on the third Tuesday of the month (except for December, July and August) at 7:00pm at the Marshall United Methodist Church. The public is always welcome to attend regular meetings. Check out what’s happening with MAGCI at marshallareagardenclub.org or at the Marshall Area Garden Club on Facebook. We hope to see you at one of our meetings.

West End Gardens
These six permanent gardens within the street median at the west end city entrance were established by the club to create a beautiful entry to Marshall on West Michigan Ave. from I-69. Over 700 daffodils were planted last fall by members as a special project and were a wonderful surprise to everyone coming in to Marshall this spring. These gardens are maintained by the club. read more here

Mason Sycamore Creek Garden Club
- Our Summer Notes
Each summer seems to speed by faster and faster and 2022 was no exception. Mason Sycamore Creek Garden Club had a lot of projects - so it seemed there was no shortage of things to do!!
I’d say our summer started with our annual Geranium Sale which culminates with the arrival of our order and distribution of plants the first part of May. This year we decided to order extra and combine with a plant sale. It went over very well and we hope to do it again in 2023. This sale is one of our biggest fundraisers.
Also in May is our task to plant the 30+ large Downtown Development Authority pots arranged throughout downtown Mason. We try to change up the floral combination each year with colorful annuals and vines. During the same period, we do our clean up and planting of the gardens at the Mason Historical Society, the Historical Pink Schoolhouse Museum, the Blue Star Memorial and the Veterans/Gold Star Memorial.
This year we took on two new projects... read more

MI Native Plant Feature
Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis)
-by Lynn O'Shaughnessy
These bright red flowers are great attractors for hummingbirds and swallowtail butterflies…both of which I have seen at mine. Although the native bumble bee can’t reach down the long tubular throats of these flowers, they will break into the base of the flowers to get their nectar reward. Bumble bees are so resourceful.
These plants do like the soil wet to medium wet, which may be why some people find it difficult to grow. I have had some plants now for four years and they are still going strong. They say the plant gets to be about 4 feet, but I have some that get to 5 feet tall. I think it is because the soil I have them growing in is a 50/50 blend of soil and peat and I have a sprinkler system…so the plants never really dry out.
Lobelia cardinalis is a difficult plant to grow from seed…even Karen Bovio from the former Specialty Growers agrees. She recommended that you try Wilczewski’s plants. I purchased 5 trays of Lobelia Cardinalis from them for the Circle Garden a couple of years ago. Their plants ended up being a bit shorter than the ones I bought from Karen, but you can’t beat the price. They were $1 each. The Lobelia cardinalis shown as a group of flowers/plants is from Wilczewski’s.
Give it a try if you have an area that stays somewhat wet in your garden. They have a nice vertical component, you can’t go wrong with the bright red flowers.

Making Winter Potted Plants Last
The winter environment can be intensely dry, and our exterior planters often don’t stay frozen the whole season. The key to keeping your outdoor color pots looking beautiful the entire winter is to keep them moist. Check and fill your planters with water each thaw, to keep the soil moist. As long as your evergreens are either frozen or moist, you will enjoy them until they are replaced with pansies in the spring.
