Sunapee Happenings

Autumn Kaleidoscope

Days are flying by and the calendar already says November. The weather has taken an abrupt turn.  Daylight hours are shorter, harvest is over, gardens are ‘put to bed’ … sorta.  Mittens and wooly hats are now in fashion and we’re scrambling to put snow tires on, lest we be caught unprepared for that inevitable first big snowfall.  Thanksgiving is right around the corner and hints of Christmas are popping up.

Cue The Music

The Canadian Duo, “Small Glories” will perform at Flying Goose tomorrow night!

“Luft is a Wailin’ Jennys alum whose work on the clawhammer banjo is to die for, while Edwards’ guitar and vocal harmonies deepen and enrich the duo’s sound.”

— NPR Music

Green Heron duo, one of this past summer's favorites at The Livery will be performing at the Andover Coffeehouse on Friday, Nov. 18th.

A recent "Britain’s Got Talent” introduced a remarkable duo who auditioned with a stellar performance of “Impossible Dream”. Enjoy!

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Adapted and Directed by Clayton Phillips

A powerful story of redemption, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, has enchanted audiences the world over with its simple message of holiday joy. Ebenezer Scrooge, that most unrepentant and miserly of fellows, is made to see the light as he survives a merciless battery of revelations by the ghosts of his own life: Jacob Marley and the Christmas Spirits of Past, Present, And Future.

A Bit of Yore (from days gone by)

Sunapee Squirrel Hunt and Celebration.

(Barbara Chalmers)

Sunapee’s Historic Fall Tradition

Sunapee has no unique Thanksgiving tradition, but it did have a fall celebration. In the 1800s and documented as early as 1872, a town squirrel hunt was held at the end of October for Sunapee’s men and boys that continued into the late 1920s. Participants formed up into two teams with the goal of reducing the squirrel population by heading out at day-break into the town’s fields and woodlands in the company of friends, relaxing, and hunting their quarry. Burlap satchels filled with carcasses were turned into the official counters all day until sundown. The 1872 hunt reduced the critter population by more than 14,000 providing a significant help to farmers. The winning team lead by a mere 210. The following year, participants were keen to beat that record and hunted nearly 20,000 squirrels. The day ended for the weary hunters with a feast where family and friends gathered at the Knowlton Block Hall or the Sunapee Inn Tavern on Lower Main Street. Vast quantities of oyster stew, cold meats, hot mashed potatoes, and a variety of pies were served along with hard cider. In the 1890s, the annual squirrel hunt also saw a reduction in the porcupine, skunk, hedgehog, rabbit, and partridge populations. Prizes were handed out to the hunter who bagged the most and to the one who bagged the least. The Sunapee Squirrel Hunter Feast seems like an old-time version of today’s Friendsgiving.
