And the Work Continues...A word from our Director about our progress to reconstruct and renew the library after our recent flood.

On July 22nd the Nevins Library experienced an air conditioning leak that severely affected the east wing of the building and damaged walls, ceilings, carpeting, and book stacks on the upper and main floors (adult fiction & non-fiction primarily.) Since that day, we have been working to maintain operations in as normal a way as possible, and to plan reconstruction and recovery. Despite our efforts to maintain all services, some things have been affected:
  • The Friends of the Library will cancel their Fall Book Sale this year...look for a GIANT sale this spring! We also cannot accept book donations for the sale until further notice.
  • Some of our adult collections are being treated for water damage, some are in storage, and some are on temporary shelving throughout the Library, making it difficult to locate specific titles. You may come in and browse all available collections (maybe you will discover a new author!) We can fulfill your requests for specific books through interlibrary loan, so please ask us to get whatever you want, or place your requests through our on-line catalog.
  • In order to minimize disruption to patrons, most reconstruction work may be done nights and weekends. This may result in a delay in our Saturday openings for this school year. Please keep an eye on our web site for closing and hours announcements.
  • The Library's Hall is full of our non-fiction collections, and our Trustees' Meeting Room is in the affected area. If you have a meeting normally scheduled at the Library, please check to make sure we can accommodate your group.
  • As we write this, we are waiting for carpet orders, so we are not sure exactly when the work will begin, and end. We will keep our website updated and you may always call us to get information.
Most of all we want to say THANK YOU to our patrons for their understanding and patience. We know it is frustrating to not have the Library operating as usual, but we hope to be back later this fall, better than ever!!

Little Free Libraries popping up all over!!
September 12 @ 4pm, Veteran's Park

On September 12, we will be holding an official opening and dedication of these little libraries.  Many of the libraries are already in use and have popped up on Facebook and other social media platforms so you may have already seen them.  The dedication will take place at the LFL at Veteran's Park at 4pm and everyone is invited.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the following for their assistance in getting these gems out into the community.  Thanks to: Dianne Debs, The Methuen Rotary Club, The City of Methuen/Mayor's office and DPW, Methuen High School Art Students and teacher Kimberly Kent, Absolute Glass, Home Depot, Sherwin Williams, The Party Connection, New England Builder, Charles Johnson 3rd (carpenter) and Gino Ballandi of the Library staff.  Also thanks to the property owners who allowed some of the libraries to be placed on their land.  Hope you'll come and celebrate with us, take a book/leave a book and enjoy reading in your community.  For more information please contact Sue Juknavorian at the Nevins Library Reference Desk 978 686-4080 x13.

New Adult Series - Live Long and Learn

This year the Library is celebrating living longer and better, and keeping active and involved in our community as we age. "Live Long & Learn" is an initiative to promote programming, support health and wellness initiatives in the community, and improve our resources for our older population, and caregivers of elders. We are launching this effort with some special programs in September:

September 16 6:30pm - Paddling in the Florida Everglades
Listen to Dr Ken Thomas describe his trip of a lifetime and see some amazing photos of the wildlife abounding in this rich environment.

September 19th at 1pm - Scams, Frauds, and Identity
Amy Schram of the Better Business Bureau will help us sort out how to avoid the most common scams out there, and how to recognize risks in our daily lives. Don't be a victim!

Literacy Training Workshops this month

Literacy Volunteers of Methuen is gearing up to train some additional volunteers starting mid September.  We have about 70 people on our wait list who are eager to have help learning the English language.  If you are a native English speaker and have two hours a month to devote to working with an adult student, please consider this volunteer opportunity.  It is very rewarding  for both tutor and student.

Orientations: Sept. 10- 7pm, Sept 12 - 10am and Sat. Sept. 14  - 10am

Training dates:  Sept. 17 and 24 @6:30 pm
                             Oct.  2, 9, 16 and 23 @ 6:30pm

You must attend one of the orientation sessions and then you may be admitted to the training workshops.  Tutors attend all 6 training dates before they are assigned a student.  Contact Kathleen Kenny, Literacy Coordinator, 978 868-4080 x32 for more information or to register for an orientation session.
Children's Department News

The start of the school year means the Children's Department is transitioning from the fast pace of our summer offerings to programs built around children's school schedules. In addition to our usual fun storytimes, this month we're launching a new book group for children in grades 2-4, which will discuss a different book from the popular "I Survived" series each month (September's selection is I Survived: The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912). Another highlight this month is the fun "quiz show" program "How Well Do You Know Your Best Friend?" for children in grades 4-6 - they bring their best friends and find out how well they know each other!
