After several years of a successful partnership, PESA was thrilled to be invited back to support John C. Fremont High School students in their 10th-grade presentations. These presentations serve as foundational work for their graduating mock defense, where they will refine and present their projects as graduating seniors.
During this three-day event, students presented on how they would improve skills that enhance their Social Learning Outcomes (SLO). These outcomes include critical thinking, effective communication, and community leadership and students are encouraged to correlate how these SLOs will help the betterment of their future professional careers.
PESA played a crucial role by serving on the panel of representatives. The panelists, including community members and educators, observed the presentations, asked probing questions, and provided valuable feedback. This interaction helped students identify their strengths (glows) and areas for improvement (grows), fostering a deeper understanding of how classroom lessons can be applied to real-life situations and their future careers.
PESA’s Assistant Director of Youth Services, Stephanie Santillan, highlighted the diverse range of skills students aimed to develop, linking them to their career aspirations. For instance, students interested in artistic fields, like cosmetology, recognized the importance of enhancing their communication and networking skills to gain clientele.
One notable presentation reflected on the importance of perseverance despite challenges such as procrastination. Santillan acknowledged, "The student expressed their desire to embrace their slow pace as a lack of effective leadership before they realized that despite procrastination, it's crucial to persevere. Which takes a leadership drive, especially as a future male barber."
Over the course of the event, more than 60 students presented their projects, gaining critical feedback that will prepare them for their senior mock defense and, in turn, shape their future endeavors. Through this support from PESA, John C. Fremont High School is effectively equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in their academic and professional lives.
