January is Radon Action Month
You can’t see, smell or taste radon, but it could be present at a dangerous level in your home.
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers, claiming the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year. Radon can get trapped inside homes and buildings and build up in the air. Over time, breathing in high levels of radon can cause lung cancer. Southwestern Virginia is known as a hotspot for high levels of radon, but elevated levels of radon have been found in homes in every county of Virginia.
Testing is accessible. Residents can protect their health by testing the indoor air in their homes. Home test kits can be ordered from the for $3 per kit. VDH website (vdhradon.org)
