Free phones help Indy’s unhoused get connected

by Kayla Barlow, Indianapolis Recorder

In a world where smartphones are an extension of our very selves, the stark reality for Indiana's unhoused population reveals a pressing need for connectivity that often goes unmet. With over 5,000 people experiencing homelessness in the state, the simple act of staying connected can mean the difference between safety and vulnerability. Enter Constellation Wireless, spearheaded by Michael Jewell, who, through a partnership with the Lifeline program, is turning the tide. By distributing free phones to those in need, Jewell and his team are not just providing a lifeline—they're rekindling hope, reconnecting families, and bridging a gap that many of us take for granted. Discover how this initiative is transforming lives and what it means for the future of support for Indiana’s homeless community. (Intro from Charitable Advisors)

Best Practices for Monitoring Nonprofit Organizations' Financial Health

By Jill Robisch, First Vice President and Manager, Nonprofit Services, The National Bank of Indianapolis

Nonprofit organizations play a crucial role in addressing social issues and serving communities. However, just like their for-profit counterparts, nonprofits must ensure sound financial management to fulfill their missions effectively. Monitoring the financial health of a nonprofit is essential for maintaining sustainability, transparency, and trust among stakeholders. Here are some best practices for keeping a close eye on the financial well-being of nonprofit organizations:

Establish Clear Financial Policies and Procedures: Implementing robust financial policies and procedures ensures transparency, accountability, and compliance. These policies should outline guidelines for budgeting, spending, fundraising, and financial reporting.

Regular Financial Reporting: Nonprofits should generate regular financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. These reports provide insights into the organization’s financial performance, trends, and areas needing improvement.

Safeguarding Non-Profits: Strategies to Prevent Theft and Embezzlement

By Rachael Cruse, Barnes Dennig

Non-profit organizations, despite their altruistic missions, are unfortunately not immune to theft and embezzlement. Large-scale charities and small community groups alike often find themselves at risk due to a combination of factors such as breaches of trust, lack of financial oversight, and limited resources.

Luckily, by strategizing and implementing preventative measures, non-profits can safeguard the integrity of their organization and help maximize resources directed toward their mission.

Balancing trust and accountability

Sometimes, a non-profit’s greatest strength can be its biggest vulnerability. While characterized by a strong sense of mission and purpose, some non-profits may lack robust administration and accountability processes. It’s common for non-profits to maintain a trusting environment, assuming that all involved, from volunteers to staff and board members, are committed to the organization’s cause. However, this trust can be exploited and can lead to theft and embezzlement.

To prevent theft, it’s important to implement intentional antitheft procedures and financial oversight policies. These should be tailored to the specific organization and should be regularly reviewed and updated. By doing so, non-profits can reduce the likelihood of problems and ensure a swift response if an issue arises. Remember, the focus should be on the processes, not the people, to avoid any bias or favoritism.
