County Fair Accepting Nominations for Old-Timers and Parade Grand Marshal

The Lassen County Fair has opened nominations for two big annual honors, the Old Timer of the Year award and the Fair Parade Grand Marshal. Both awards will be celebrated at this year’s fair, which runs from July 17th through the 21st.

The Old Timer of the Year

The Old Timer of the Year award is judged on kindness and service to our community. The nominee has to be at least 60 years old and have lived in Lassen County for at least 10 years.

This award honors a senior who has demonstrated outstanding volunteerism, leadership, helping, teaching, mentoring, or advocating for others in Lassen County.

The award is based on dedication, overarching commitment, and demonstrated impact on those served. The nominee must be willing and able to attend the Lassen County Fair Parade on July 20th.

Click here to download the Old Timer of the Year Nomination form. Deadline to submit Old Timer nominations is 5:00p.m., June 7th, at the Fair office, 195 Russell Avenue in Susanville, or emailed to lcfair@co.lassen.ca.us.

Parade Grand Marshal

The Grand Marshal award is a century old tradition based on accomplishments and contributions to the community. The nominee will be selected on the basis of their contributions to the quality of life in Lassen County through civic or social services; humanitarianism; personal achievements in the areas of arts, sports, etc.; or based on the distinction that they have brought to Lassen County resulting from achievements elsewhere.

The nominee should be a current or long term past resident of Lassen County. The nominee must be willing to act as Grand Marshal and be willing and able to attend the Lassen County Fair Parade on July 20th.

The nomination forms must be submitted by May 13th, at 5:00p.m., and include a brief history and accomplishments of the nominee along with the contact information of the person who submitted the nomination form.

Susanville Police Department

Encourages Everyone to Share the Road

May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and the Susanville Police Department is encouraging everyone to get active and safely take bike rides while at the same time reminding drivers to be on the lookout for more people biking and walking.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 1,105 people killed while riding a bike in 2022, and an estimated 46,195 bicyclists were injured. In 2021, 976 bicyclists were killed (a 1.9% increase from 2020) and an estimated 41,615 bicyclists were injured (a 7% increase from 2020).

To help keep people safe while biking or walking , the Susanville Police Department will conduct a traffic safety operation throughout the month focused on driver behaviors that put bicyclists and pedestrians at risk, such as speeding, making illegal turns, failure to yield right of way, and stop sign/red light running.

The Susanville Police Department suggests the following safety tips for bicyclists and drivers:

Drivers

  • Slow down and follow the speed limit. Be careful traveling through intersections.
  • Look carefully for bicyclists and pedestrians before making a turn or opening a car door near streets or bike paths.
  • Be patient when traveling behind a bicyclist and give them space when passing. California law requires drivers to change a lane, when possible, to pass bicyclists and always pass with at least 3 feet of space.
  • Never drive distracted or impaired.

Bike Riders

  • Use lights at night.
  • Although not required for riders 18 and older, always wear a properly secured helmet. Helmets significantly reduce the chance of a head injury in the event of a crash.
  • Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.
  • Yield to pedestrians, just as a driver would. Pedestrians have the right-of-way within marked or unmarked crosswalks at intersections.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Search is Underway for This Year’s Miss Lassen County

The Lassen County Fair and the Miss Lassen County Scholarship Pageant are searching for talented Lassen County residents between the ages of 17 and 22 to participate in the annual scholarship program.

The entrants will compete in a series of activities climaxing with the July 17th pageant in the grandstands at the 2024 Lassen County Fair.

The pageant is open to all residents of the county and Director Shelley Bennett says she would love to have participation from rural areas like Westwood and Herlong.

The Miss Lassen County Scholarship Competition’s mission is to assist young women in reaching their goals through coaching in public speaking, developing their talents, and providing community service opportunities.

The competition is based on the concept of becoming the best ‘You’ possible.

A typical summer for contestants is filled with weekly seminars, dance rehearsals and community activities, as well as lots of fun. Every contestant benefits from the skill development and collaboration provided by the scholarship program.
