Summer Tips and Reminders from our School Nurses

Hello families! We hope you are enjoying the summer as we are excited to care for your children this coming year. Please help us by:

  1. Providing updated immunization, physicals and health information for ALL Students.
  2. Making sure all medication has a pharmacy label with updated doctor’s orders.
  3. Drop off all medication to the school nurse
  4. Making sure to NOT put medicine in student’s backpacks.

Thanks, and have a wonderful rest of the summer!

NSS Tech Coach Leads AI Workshop

Educators from across Rhode Island recently gathered at URI for an AI workshop designed to explore the effective integration of artificial intelligence into classrooms. The session offered valuable insights into navigating this evolving technology.

A standout moment was the contribution of Vanessa Miller, our Tech Coach in Narragansett, who played a crucial role as the Lead Facilitator. Miller highlighted the importance of AI literacy for both students and teachers. "Understanding how AI works and how to use it appropriately is crucial," she emphasized. "We want students to use AI as a tool for learning, not just as a shortcut to answers."

Robert Shield, an ELA teacher at Narragansett Pier Middle School, shared this perspective. "With no established guidelines from RIDE yet, we're all figuring out the best way to incorporate AI into our teaching practices," he observed. (RIDE is expected to release guidelines this fall.)

The workshop was part of a series aimed at preparing educators for the growing presence of AI in education. As AI becomes more integrated into classrooms, the goal is to ensure both teachers and students can use these tools effectively and responsibly. During the first day of the three-day workshop, both Robert Shield and NSS Educator Christopher Dolos demonstrated how they incorporate AI into their teaching methods.

As the workshop concluded with discussions on broader AI policies, Vanessa Miller continues to lead the charge in equipping our community with essential tech skills.

We're Getting Ready for you at NES!

As the summer winds down, I encourage you and your students to dive back into the mindset of ‘back to school.’

While our students were away, our wonderful custodial and maintenance staff have been getting the building ready and our school is sparkling! Construction on some of the rooms has been done to make them more ADA compliant and some upgrading has been done to the kindergarten and preschool rooms. Summer planning took place during the break and our teachers met in June to update curriculum and make adjustments to curriculum calendars.

Our district also did a summer reading project around Building Thinking Classrooms by Peter Lildejahl, and we are excited to implement strategies to enhance students’ experiences in problem solving collaboratively around given tasks. This is something we dabbled in last year and look forward to expanding on going into the fall.

I hope you and your families have been able to enjoy some vacation time and continue to do so. This summer is also the perfect time for your children to enjoy some reading and we hope you’ve been able to visit the new Narragansett library to explore! If your students need “down time” from electronics, or when they complain of boredom, we always suggest having them write down some of their summer memories, play board games, play a game outdoors, or anything that will enhance their growth and development.

Finally, be on the lookout mid-August as class placements will be coming your way. Continue to check your email for updates as we near the first day of school and we finalize all our preparations.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

REMINDER: NPS Summer Math Packets

We're pleased to share that your child will have the opportunity to practice their math skills over the summer.

Not only will this opportunity keep their skills fresh and sharp, it will reduce the anxiety students experience at the beginning of the year when they wonder if they will remember what they learned in previous Math classes.

The practice is due Friday, September 8th to give students an opportunity to get support on specific examples they had difficulty with. There will be a check for understanding the following week to identify students who are lacking the prerequisite skills they need in order to be successful and get them support as soon as possible.

Pier School Athletic News!

Welcome back to a new and exciting sports year. All middle schools in RI are now part of RIIL and require a new RISK Form for all students once in their middle school career. RIIL will be providing a web site and information similar to high schools. Teams will be competing with similar teams and should have improved official scheduling.

With all that being said, all student athletes must have a new RIIL RISK form on file with the AD and must have a current RI School Physical on file with the school nurse (or a bridge note) before the first day on the practice field. Please fill out and submit as soon as possible to ensure students don’t miss practice days. Both can be dropped off at the school office or sent in a PDF form to the AD. Photos will not be accepted.

All signups are still on the FAMILYID.COM site to also be completed as soon as possible. Information will be sent out only to the signed-up student athletes. Soccer will begin at the end of August while Cross Country will start the first day of school.

If the following forms are not on file, the student athlete cannot practice:

1. Signup on FamilyID.com

2. Turn in new RIIL Risk form for Middle School.

3. Have a current school physical (dated after 9/20/2023) on file. (CLICK HERE FOR FORM)
