Your Memoir, the Way You Want It

On We Grow: Another Office Move and a New Shop

2023 is bringing some exciting changes for Modern Memoirs, Inc.! We are delighted to share that we are moving into new office space, right up the road here in Amherst, Massachusetts. While we’ve been happy in our current offices for nearly two-and-a-half years, we’re bursting at the seams and need room to grow. Our new, spacious suite in the building pictured above includes four offices for staff, as well as a conference room for hosting meetings, readings, and writing groups or other groups. (Contact me if you’d like to discuss using the space for your meeting or group of up to 12 people.)

As of February 1, 2023, our phone number and online presence will remain the same, and our new mailing address will be:

MODERN MEMOIRS, INC.

417 West Street

Suite #104

Amherst, MA 01002

Happily, we have two new interns joining us this semester who will be of great help as we carry out our move. Cori Garrett-Goodyear is introduced in this newsletter, and we will feature our other intern next month after they start their work with us.

We are also thrilled to announce a new retail arm of our company, Memory Lane Books & Gifts. For now it will mainly operate as an online shop, but our new space does include an area where we will display items for sale should visitors wish to make purchases.

Read on for more information about our shop, and thank you for your support of our business as we continue to grow and realize new dreams.

Wishing you a very happy new year,

Megan St. Marie

President

Announcing the New

Modern Memoirs Shop,

Memory Lane Books & Gifts

While the new retail arm of Modern Memoirs, Memory Lane Books & Gifts, is not (yet) a fully fledged brick-and-mortar shop, it’s up and running as an online store.

With help from Book Designer Nicole Miller, Vice President Sean St. Marie has spearheaded the shop set-up, having carried out a similar project launching the online store at the Emily Dickinson Museum, where he serves as Administrative Coordinator.

We’re starting small, with just a few products for sale in each of the following categories:

  • selected books by Modern Memoirs clients who wish to sell their titles on consignment
  • books by Modern Memoirs staff
  • bookish gifts for readers and writers
  • carefully curated used and new trade books for readers of all ages in the areas of memoir and autobiography, family history, writing, and the art of the book

Use the code MEMORYLANE23 for free shipping on orders placed through February 28, 2023.

Don’t see what you’re looking for? Please contact us if there are particular products or titles you’d like to see featured as we develop our inventory.

Making “Sense” of the Past

By Megan St. Marie

“Being surrounded by things—including scents—that ground me in a love of family and remembrance of those who came before me sparks affinity with Modern Memoirs clients, who are often moved by those same feelings when they come to us with their book projects.”

Welcome to Publishing Intern Cori Garrett-Goodyear

Our new Publishing Intern, Cori Garrett-Goodyear, is a student in the MFA in Creative Nonfiction at Bay Path University. The program includes a final-semester internship, and when Cori happened to see the Modern Memoirs sign as she drove by our offices one day, she decided to reach out to see if she could complete that requirement with us. We are so glad she did! Read her full bio on our website’s Meet the Staff page.

Staff responses

Megan St. Marie: I grew up going to The Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, Vermont, and it still tops my list of favorite indie shops.

Sean St. Marie: Like Liz, I’d have to choose The Montague Bookmill, with its wonderful tagline “Books you don't need in a place you can't find.”

Ali de Groot: With its impressive digital library & collections, online bookstore, and thriving events calendar, the Yiddish Book Center is a beautiful resource here in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Liz Sonnenberg: The Montague Bookmill, housed in an 1842 gristmill on the Sawmill River in Montague, Massachusetts. A fascinating collection of used books, comfy chairs, coffee, cookies, a waterfall... it’s dreamy.

Nicole Miller: Raven Used Books in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Cori Garrett-Goodyear: I grew up with The Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley, Massachusetts and recently reconnected with its presence in the community (and my personal life) last semester.
