Point-in-Time Event Hosted by Central UMC was a success!

Central was host to this magnet event for the PIT Count by hosting a Resource Fair. Nearly 20 different service organizations joined us to serve our community. We met about 40 neighbors with eight volunteers from Central! These magnet events help illuminate and give even more depth to the PIT Count. Ultimately, the PIT Count is not just about numbers but about visibility and the commitment to ensuring that no one is left without a path to stability and support.

The Point-in-Time (PIT) Count is an annual effort to measure the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. Conducted nationwide, the PIT count provides critical data about sheltered and unsheltered individuals, offering a snapshot of the scale and demographics of homelessness in our community. For New Mexico, the PIT Count is especially significant, given our state's unique challenges, including rural areas, Native American communities, and a higher-than-average poverty rate. The data gathered informs federal funding allocation, local policy decisions and helps state and local organizations identify trends , and advocate for solutions tailored to New Mexico’s cultural and geographic landscape. Community members contribute to a deeper understanding of homelessness by participating in the PIT Count and help drive meaningful action toward reducing it across the state.

Our Neighbors' Experiences Zoom, This Thursday Night, 7 p.m

A few months back, I took the rail runner up to Santa Fe and noticed many posters and information about how to report Human Trafficking in New Mexico. January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. So, this month, we have the opportunity to hear from Birga Alden. Birga is the Chief Communications Officer for the New Mexico Dream Center, an organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking. Born and raised in Albuquerque, Birga has always had a passion for work involving community improvement. After hosting radio programs for nearly 10 years, Birga transitioned into nonprofit work and has been in collaborative projects that help families in need since 2016. Birga will be presenting on human trafficking in New Mexico, providing facts on what is going on and dispelling misinformation that gets spread through social media. Learning about human trafficking is a heavy topic. Recognizing signs of Human Trafficking and raising awareness can help prevent human trafficking and build support for the most vulnerable in our city.

About This Event

The Albuquerque Academy Departments of Diversity, Culture & Belonging and Counseling & Human Development, along with our Allies, Friends, and Parents of LGBTQIA+ Academy parent council, are excited to host a Transgender Cultural Fluency training session with Adrien Lawyer, executive director and co-founder of the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico (TGRCNM). This training lays the foundation for participants to understand better what it means to be transgender, clarify common misconceptions, explore challenges faced by transgender communities, and identify ways to become strong advocates for transgender people.

This event is open to parents, students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and other community members. It offers an invaluable opportunity to deepen our understanding of gender diversity, learn how to support transgender and nonbinary individuals in our lives, and further our mission to foster a caring, inclusive, and just community.

Following the presentation, we’ll have time for questions and meaningful discussion.

A Prayer for Those Who Are Enslaved Or Trafficked

World Vision

Dear Lord, You demand justice for Your children who have been wronged. Strengthen those who investigate and prosecute traffickers. Encourage them when they are weary. Give survivors courage when asked to testify against their former captors. Let Your justice prevail.
