PNA TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Brian Hitchings, senior director of multimedia sales

What made you get into this industry?

My first career was in commercial real estate in the Philly market for about 10 years. Geography was a big part of the learning process. So, when my father was considering retirement from the family business, Philadelphia Area Newspapers, he “knew” I’d be good at it given the geo experience. So, I took it over and ran for 20 years as the third generation. My grandfather literally invented the One-Order / One-Bill concept in the early 1930s.

When a position opened up at MANSI, I jumped at the opportunity since it was becoming more and more difficult to operate in just 1 market. MANSI is a bigger, better, faster, stronger version of what PAN did, with a state-wide and national footprint.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out?

Learn your market geographically and know all types of media consumption … and BUY A WALL MAP, you can’t learn any market on a 2-inch cell phone screen 😊

If you could have done anything differently, would you?

Yeah, I should have yelled, kicked and screamed more than I did for the news media outlets to not give their content away for free … that coupled with technology has made it impossible to put the genie back in the bottle.

PNA MEMBER RESOURCE

Build an internship program, recruit diverse staff or improve upon an existing special section with the PNA Foundation Fellows Fund for the Future

What would you do with additional funding? From hiring correspondents to purchasing equipment, there are several ways to elevate your news media organization. Applications are due by June 30!
