NEWS & UPDATES

COLLEGE NEWS

Welcome back and happy new year to all students, staff and faculty! First, I want to thank associate dean and professor Dr. Sharon Kuska for her leadership over this past year as interim dean. Next, I want to thank all of you for a warm welcome to UNL and for creating this special place. My family journeyed through winter storms to make it here in early January, and I have begun to settle into this wonderful community. In my short time on campus, I have learned so much, and I have only become more inspired by our past successes, current strengths and future potential in the College of Architecture. As we begin spring semester, I look forward to meeting more of our college community, learning about our collective ambition and collaborating to bring that ambition to fruition.

Good luck as you continue with your preparations for spring semester! Be courageous, practice empathy and inspire impact.

Regards, and see you at the Hyde lecture tonight!

CONSTRUCTION NEWS

Hello all and welcome back! As you have probably noticed, the “stacks” demolition is complete! Over break, the construction team has been over-excavating around the original “stacks” foundation, which will function as the basement and foundation of the new building, creating a larger footprint for the new building that will be backfilled back up to grade with suitable soils. During this excavation process tradesmen were able to access utility lines that tie back to the university utility grid, further allowing verification of new utility locations and reroute options. Due to the age of some existing utility lines, such as the steam tunnels as shown, asbestos insulation needed to be treated properly.

In the coming weeks, the floor slab covering the basement will be removed as well as portions of the basement walls. Helical piles will be screwed into the ground based on a grid system, acting as additional structural stabilization for the new building.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

After our long break between the semesters, we all need to hit the ground running. We start out with a bang with the Marth Schwartz lecture on the evening of the first day of classes. This should prove to be an inspiring beginning to the spring semester. There will be a workshop activity on Tuesday with Martha organized by the ASLA student group. You should connect with Jack Essink or Sarah Cope to find out more about this activity. Next week the newsletter will come from the student group to give you some idea about the activities planned for the spring semester. I think it will be a busy semester.

I am excited to see all of you again, and seeing all the great work you will be producing in your educational journey. This is a time for you to explore and share with your peers and other students. There are certain to be some challenges along the way, and you should not hesitate asking questions and seeking help when you need it. We all what you to be successful. I am sure the faculty has some great things for you to work on. I know I do! Welcome back to all of you and have a great semester.

COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING

Welcome all Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) students for spring 2023! We are so excited to have five new MCRP students starting this semester. Two early orientation Zoom meetings were hosted to assist student course registration and facilitate communications among students and faculty. All MCRP students are encouraged to register to attend the Nebraska Planning Conference on March 8-10, 2023, in Kearney, Nebraska.

During this spring semester, the selected faculty candidates will visit Lincoln for the interview process to fulfill the new planning faculty position. We welcome all faculty, staff and students to be involved in the hiring process. More -

ARCHITECTURE

Welcome back!

Thank you to the students, faculty, administrators and staff that made 2022 an excellent year in the Architecture Program. We accomplished a lot during the calendar year. I also want to extend my appreciation to the 15 part-time faculty teaching in our program this spring. Most of these professionals are UNL alums that bring a range of expertise into the classroom. As we progress into the semester, I hope you will continue participating and observing the various ways of thinking, making and designing throughout the semester by attending Hyde lectures, lunchtime events and studio reviews.

Please feel free to contact me to say hello or schedule a meeting.

Have a great first week. -David Karle

INTERIOR DESIGN

Welcome back to a new year and spring semester that is certain to be filled with learning, creativity and growth! Since our break, our faculty and students have earned some very exciting achievements that honor their excellence and dedication to teaching and the advancement of design.

UNL’s Interior Design Program will have a successful showing and representation at the upcoming 2023 Interior Design Educators Council National Conference in March. Fourth-year interior design students Keely Perkins and Grace Vollmuth and instructors Nate Bicak, Kendra Ordia, Sonya Turkman and I all have scholarship and creative activity that have been peer-reviewed and selected to be shared with other academics in Vancouver. FACUTLY & STUDENT NEWS

The BVH Architecture-Norman Ochsner Design Excellence Fund was awarded at the end of the fall semester to third-year, interior design student, McKenzie Teten, for her custom- made interior object demonstrating creative and technical excellence in study, fabrication, craft and detail. The full-scale chunk model was completed in the IDES 301 Material’s Applications course taught by Associate Professor Nate Bicak and represents a component of Teten’s IDES 310 Studio project titled “Nourish Nebraska” co-taught by Professor Mark Hinchman, Assistant Professor Kendra Locklear Ordia and Lecturer Emily Drummy.

Teten’s design encompasses an approachable interior environment that provides access to fresh produce along with an education that sets consumers up for long term, healthy lifestyle changes and benefits through programs like teaching kitchens, hydroponic and aquaponic systems.

Improving the quality of teaching through research and creative activity, the following faculty members have sought to enrich the student experience and make a mark on the trajectory of the professions and our communities with their scholarly endeavors. Please help us congratulate Yunwoo Nam, Rumiko Handa, Salvador Lindquist, Aziza Cyamani and Zhenghong Tang for their recent accomplishments.
