Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
As we close out 2022, I'd like to thank all of you that have visited, sent in updates, attended events, participated in contests, generously given towards the Annual Fund, and shared your time and talent with all of us. If you shared your updates with us, you will have seen them on the pages of our beautiful print publication, Oakleaf, which was sent out this fall. If you haven't received your copy, and would like to receive it, please reach out to me.
Thank you all of our alumnae that generously gave during Giving Tuesday; with your help we were able to surpass our goal and your generosity is greatly appreciated by the current Oakies.
An additional special thank you goes out to the Class of 2018 for their outstanding participation in this year's Giving Tuesday campaign. Ladies you rocked it! Thank you!
We look forward to what 2023 has to bring and hope to see you all often throughout the year.
Merry Christmas,
Maritere

Alumnae Perform Together
Alumnae, Madeline Manaker '12 and Grace (Gilday '09) Bohlin, recently performed together with Maryland Lyric Opera in their concert-version production of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera. Congratulations to both of you!
Madeline Manaker '12, also shared that after having been involved in music/choirs while attending Oakcrest, she is now an opera singer in the DC area finishing a Master's of Music at George Mason University. She recently
performed as the Mother in George Mason University's production of Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. The one hour opera, in English, tells the story of a mother and son running out of money and food on a cold winter night. Their lives change when some surprise visitors come knocking on their door... the Three Kings on their journey to see the Christ Child.
Great work Madeline!

Maria (Kilner '99) Sousa
As Maria (Kilner ’99) Sousa looks back at her years at Oakcrest, she sees the ways that her liberal arts education shaped her college experience and beyond.
“The liberal arts education I received at Oakcrest really set me up for success in college - to be a thinker and to ask questions,” she says. “My education at Oakcrest helped me become the problem-solver and leader that I am today.”
After graduating from Oakcrest in 1999, Maria attended The Catholic University of America, studying communications and media studies. Her degree led her to The Heritage Foundation, a conservative public policy think tank in Washington, D.C., where she worked for almost two decades, working her way from administrative assistant on the web team to the organization’s digital director. In May 2022 Maria returned to her alma mater, The Catholic University of America, where she now is the Director of Marketing.

The Oakcrest Chapel
Christ is at the heart of Oakcrest School, and has been since its founding. At each of the school’s campuses, a dedicated chapel with the Blessed Sacrament has grounded the school by allowing the students, faculty, and visitors to make frequent visits to Our Lord. At the Yuma Campus, in a niche behind the altar stood Our Lady of Oakcrest. The statue was found in the late 70s, and was restored by a friend of Oakcrest. This statue has held a special place in each of the Oakcrest chapels, and stands today in the chapel of the Vienna campus. In the McLean campus, daily Mass was usually celebrated in the auditorium, but the intimate chapel was home to the Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Oakcrest. During these years funds were raised for the Vienna campus, which would have a beautiful chapel large enough for school Masses. A key idea in the design of the Vienna campus is that the chapel would be a “central anchor of the school, and off it would radiate the two wings,” Victoria Bigliano, Interior Designer of the Vienna campus and visual arts teacher, explained. Many thoughtful and beautiful details went into designing and building the chapel - the flooring was sourced from the Holy Land; the Stations of the Cross were designed and the backings were built by the father of an Oakcrest alumna, Peter Neville (Katherine ’18); and the beautiful painting of the Holy Family was commissioned by local artist Henry Wingate. But the chapel is not yet finished, Ms. Bigliano said there are additions and adjustments that will be made in the years to come which will continue to enhance this sacred space.
