CELEBRATING NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK
We Can't Do Our Work, Without the Work of Our Volunteers
For 50 years, the National Volunteer Week has been an opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle society’s greatest challenges, to build stronger communities and be a force that transforms the world. Volunteering is a way to stay connected and use lifelong skills for the good of the community.
The AAA is a non-profit government agency. Like other non-profits, we can't do our work without the work of our hundreds of volunteers. The volunteer rate - the hourly rate calculated for volunteer efforts is $25.43 per hour. If we calculate the value of volunteer time to our organization across all programs, their work is worth more than $240,000 each year. Our Circle of Friends friendly caller, Senior Medicare Patrol combatting fraud, Medicare Assistance to educate seniors on cost savings, and our Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) that recruits, trains and places volunteers are just some of our programs that utilize volunteers.
In April, RSVP (serving Baldwin and Escambia Counties) hosted its Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the James P Nix Senior Center in Fairhope. In 2023-2024 RSVP volunteers planted flowers and trees, were friendly faces for Thomas Hospital patients, called seniors stuck at home, delivered joy to long term care residents and worked community events. Our free tax preparation program completed more than 2,000 returns, resulting in millions of dollars in refunds for seniors and the disabled. We can't do our work without our elected official partners, so a special thank you to Daphne Mayor Robin LeJuene and Baldwin County Commissioner Matt McKenzie for showing their support.
