THE WEEK IN BRIEF | January 23, 2025

God’s glory is revealed in the reading of scripture. People stand at attention. People weep. People prostrate themselves in prayer. The unity of the church is another reflection of God’s glory. Most gloriously, the promises of God are fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. Gather round. Listen up. Glimpse the glory of God.

LISTEN TO PAST SUNDAY SERMONS

Heavenly Father, in your Word you have given us a vision of that holy city to which the nations of the world bring their glory. Look upon and visit the cities of the earth. Renew the ties of mutual regard which form our civic life. Send us honest and able leaders. Help us to eliminate poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with righteousness, and justice with order, and that men and women from various cultures and with differing talents may find with one another the fulfillment of their humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.

G. K. Chesterton

ON YOUR STEWARDSHIP JOURNEY

We Are Lights in a Dark World

We are new creatures in Christ, the Apostle Paul declares (2 Corinthians 5:17)! As such, we no longer view ourselves or others the way we once did. We have a new role; we are ambassadors for Christ, “as though God were making his appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20). And those to whom he appeals are the lost for whom Christ has died. What a sober responsibility we have! As stewards of the Gospel that we spread not just with our mouths, but with our actions as well, let us implore God to enable us to be his light in this dark world.

Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven, I thank you that you have chosen and called me to be your child. Help me to be faithful and obedient wanting to honor you with my thoughts and actions. Use me, Lord, as your light to a dark and sinful world. Thank you for your saving grace given to me and all people through your Son on the Cross. In Christ’s name I pray. Amen

May God bless you on your stewardship journey.

SCRIP

This Sunday

9:30 - 10:45 a.m.

Cuthbertson Fellowship Hall

If the wise men were coming to visit a new born baby today, they might be confused about what gifts to bring. They couldn’t go wrong if they stopped in the fellowship hall between services and bought gift cards. The frankincense and myrrh might not be welcomed in today’s environments. However, we must admit that the gold would be most welcome. In any case, we still have gift cards that can still be used. And, realistically, we can’t count on the wise men to help pay off our mortgage.

YARD WORK DAY

Saturday, February 1

1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Church Grounds

We need volunteers to help with our Winter Landscape Workday on Saturday, Feb. 1. We have lots of pruning to do as well as some general cleanup. No special skills required! Enjoy fresh air and fellowship as we work together. We will be working from 1:00 to 4:00 pm; come for as much time as you can spare. In case of rain, we will postpone to Feb. 8. Contact Amy Barish at amyobarish@gmail.com or 770-617-1621 with any questions.

Flower Chart

Each week flowers adorn our altar area. Any weeks for which there isn’t a sponsor, flowers will not be placed on the altar. It is located on the bulletin board in the administrative hall or you can send the information to the Business Manager, Kathy Voerg at ctk1125@ctklutheran.com.

Church Phone

The Church phone (770-889-5328) is a land line. It DOES NOT receive text messages. Lately many have been trying to text the number. The office can see that a text was attempted, but we cannot read the text.

Friday is the Pastor’s and Staff’s Day Off. Please refrain from calling the office or the Pastor on his cell (or texting). If you have a pastoral care emergency after normal office hours, please call the church office and press “2.” This will call the Business Manager’s cell.

Prayer Requests

Prayer Request cards are available next to the offering plates in the narthex. If you would like to add someone to the Prayer List, please fill one out and place it in the offering plate. Prayer requests can also be emailed to the Business Manager. Prayer requests need to be submitted by noon on Tuesday to be included in the coming Sunday's bulletin.

Church Offering

Thank you to all that have continued to give. The easiest way for you to send your contribution to the church is through our online giving. It is simple and easy to use. If you are not comfortable using online services, you can simply mail your contribution to the church or drop it in the locking mailbox next to the portico.

Scam Alert

Several members have received texts and emails this week supposedly from Pastor Finley asking, "if you have a minute, I have a favor to ask." Always check the phone number and email that the request is from!  The request then comes for a gift card or money. Neither Pastor Finley nor any staff member at Christ the King will ever ask for money via text or email!
