President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

Do you remember when you were asked to join Rotary?

My ask came in 2015.

I had known Ray Dobbs for years, but we had recently grown closer through shared youth group activities. One day as we were chatting, Ray said, “Would you be interested in joining Rotary?” I told him I would. A few months later, on November 30th, 2015, I became the world’s newest Rotarian (as we like to say in our induction!).

Like many organizations, becoming a member is just the first step. To truly embody the term Rotarian requires investment in the club over time. This may take the form of working with youth, fundraising, scholarships, or community or international service.

But an even simpler act is to do what Ray did in 2015: ask a friend to join Rotary.

I came from a family of Rotarians, so Ray knew he could skip the introductions and go straight to the ‘ask’. Your friend may not know Rotary as well. You may need to do some education first and invite him or her to a few lunches.

Regardless of the path, the day they are inducted into membership will be a triple win. You will have a friend join the Rotarian ranks. They will be a part of the rich Rotary world. And our club will have a new member, who one day may just go on to lead the club.

I invite you then, to think of your professional and social circles. Think of one person you might call today. Take the next step in your journey as a Rotarian. Ask a friend to join the Lake Chelan Rotary Club.

Yours in Rotary,

Guy Evans

Rotary Fireside Chat November 10 at 5pm

If you have joined Lake Chelan Rotary Club in the last two years, you will be getting a personal invitation to attend a "Rotary Fireside Chat” on November 10 at 5 p.m. at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce. Light appetizers and beverages will be provided.

The Fireside is a chance to learn from veteran members a bit more about our club and an opportunity to ask questions you may have about Rotary.  You will leave with stronger connections to our club and our District and have a great time in the process!

Please contact John Ausnes for more information at (253) 312-7550.

PHF Recipients Recognized

Three members of the Lake Chelan Rotary Club received Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) recognitions at the November 1 meeting. Shown above is Dan Hodge, who was presented with his pin and certificate by our club Foundation Chair, Steve Clark. PHF recognition was also announced for Susie Hepner and Morgan Picton, who were not in attendance.

The recognition is named after Paul Harris, who founded Rotary in 1905. The PHF recognition was created in Harris’s memory in 1957 as a way to show appreciation for contributions made to the Foundation’s charitable and educational programs. A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who contributes $1,000 or in whose name that amount is contributed. The PHF honors an individual’s service to the community and demonstrates significant support for the meaningful work of The Rotary Foundation’s goals of world peace and international understanding.

Donations made to The Rotary Foundation fund Rotary International’s seven Areas of Focus: promoting peace; fighting disease, providing opportunities for clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; supporting education; saving and enhancing the lives of mothers and children; growing local economies; and protecting the environment. Congratulations and thank you to these three members for your contributions.

Rotary Foundation Moment

WHAT ARE DISTRICT DESIGNATED FUNDS?

District Designated Funds (DDF) are generated based on contributions to the Annual Fund. Every year, each district’s contributions to the Annual Fund are apportioned as follows: 5% is deducted for operational costs, and then the remainder is split equally, 47.5% each, between the World Fund and funding for the district. As we’ve mentioned, the money is invested for three years before it becomes available to districts. Our district can ask for up to half of its DDF in a district grant each year, then use the funds for the grants and programs that matter most in our area. In this way, The Rotary Foundation can be an integral part of what Rotary can accomplish in our community.

HOW DOES THE ROTARY FOUNDATION USE DONATIONS?

The Rotary Foundation transforms charitable contributions into programs that fight polio and build peace, into humanitarian projects that change lives, and into scholarships and vocational training. The funds are also used for local projects that Rotary members feel passionate about. As a global organization that operates in nearly every country, Rotary takes stewardship of its funds seriously and we’ve received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator for 14 years in a row. The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers helps ensure that grant funds are spent properly. In addition, trained members oversee the use of funds at the club and district level.

Centennial Project 2024

Our club will celebrate its 100-year birthday in 2026. To honor this milestone, Lake Chelan Rotary is completing ten $10,000 Centennial Projects - one each year - to total $100,000 of investment in our community.

This year, the Club and Fund boards are considering a $15,000 Centennial Project that would have both a local as well as regional impact.

The project has two components:

Kids Sailboat Play Structure: Purchase and install, with the City of Chelan, a sailboat play structure at Lakeside Park. The club would contribute $10,000 to the project ($5,000 from a district grant) as well as the labor to install the structure.

Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council Food Distribution Center: We were joined at last Tuesday's meeting by Alan Walker, Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary member and Executive Director of the CSCAC, to learn a bit more about this project. The CDCAC operates the regional food distribution center that supports the Chelan Food Bank and other food banks in the region. Our Food Bank receives 2,500 lbs of food every week from the CDCAC. As needs grow in the region, the CDCAC needs a bigger warehouse space.   Wenatchee area clubs are contributing over $15,000 to the project. The Lake Chelan Rotary Club would join these clubs and contribute $5,000.

If you have any comments or questions about these potential projects please reach out to President Guy.

Environmental Service

On October 29, Sandra Clausen presented a check for $7,900 to Julie McCoy of 911 Glass Rescue (shown above in top photo). This was a collaborative community partnership that crosses generations, as Sandra is the mother of Megan Clausen, co-founder along with Devyn Smith of Glass to Sand Lake Chelan.

The check represents the balance of funds held by Glass to Sand after the sale of the original bottle crusher. 911 Glass Rescue is grateful for the partnership with Megan and family and for the original vision of Glass to Sand, which was started in 2019, and has evolved into 911 Glass Rescue, which continues to serve the Lake Chelan community.
