NOTES
💚 RIVERSIDE CLEAN UP DAY
Thank you to the students, parents, staff, trustees, and alumni who came out to help us clean up and fix up Riverside on Saturday. We are extremely grateful for both the energetic spirit and skilled experience you bring to that event, we depend on it to make us look our best. If you weren't able to attend, there are a few remaining clean up chores to be done, as well as some summer painting. Please email Nelia if you can lend a hand in the days or weeks ahead.
LATIN SUCCESS
14 students from Riverside participated in the NHJCL Forum at Phillips Exeter Academy on Sunday, competing against high schools from New Hampshire. Successes achieved included: one of our three Certamen teams placing second at the novice level, Julian Garvin and Kellan Bristol earning first places at the on the level one tests on Roman History and Ancient Greek, and Ignacio Montague and Henry Jolliffe facing off in the finals to come in first and second in gladiatorial combat!
SPIRIT WEEK
The students planning and organizing Friday's Recess Relay Against Cancer have planned a dress-up spirit week for this week. With apologies for the late announcement, we hope that elementary families saw details in your boomerang folders last week. For the rest of the week:
  • Tuesday - wear your sports uniform or a jersey/tshirt of a team you support!
  • Wednesday - get out your favorite western hat, shirt, or boots
  • Thursday - dress up like your dream job in the future
  • Friday - wear your house colors, we'll be taking a drone photo of the whole community
8th GRADE PRESENTATIONS
As one of many culminating efforts, 8th graders are challenged to present to the school on a topic about which they are passionate, and can apply their individual skills and passions to community improvement in that area. We encourage Riverside parents and mentors to attend these assembly presentations and to be a part of the supportive audience that celebrates their efforts.
  • Tuesday, May 7: Hip Hop Dance by Maya Holderby
  • Wednesday, May 8: College Football by Quinn Amidon
  • Monday, May 13: The Benefits of Soccer by Gabe Adams
  • Tuesday, May 14: Motocross by Clint Heinrich
We will continue the updated schedule in future Monday Memos.
PAG MEETING
Our last PAG meeting of the year is tomorrow, Tuesday, May 7 at 5:00 pm. All parents are welcome to attend. Dinner will be provided. The agenda will include reflecting on this year and planning for next year, as well as details about the Super Raffle event and the Teacher Appreciation Meals.
3-5th BIOGRAPHY FAIR
3-5th graders will be presenting their research about interesting people to parents from about 8:15-8:45 in the 3rd and 5th grade classrooms and in the assembly space. Other students will be hear their presentations later in the morning.

Come celebrate their efforts! Outside of the designated exhibit halls will be pennies and question cards. Visitors will take a handful of pennies and a question card. They put the penny in the cup to make each wax museum statue come to life. Visitors can ask the statue the questions from the card and should return the question card on the way out to be reused.
RIVERSIDE AGAINST CANCER
Relay Recess is this Friday, May 10th, from 12:00 - 2:30. We hope you’re planning to join us in this walk. Bring a picnic lunch to the soccer field at 12:00 and the walk-a-thon will start directly after our whole group drone photo from above. In anticipation of rainy weather, please make sure students have all their waterproof gear on Friday! A special thank you goes out to Jamie and Evan Robinson for making the drone photography possible for us. Have your walking shoes ready and rest up for lap after lap of music, silly themes, dancing, and just plain fun.

All students have fundraising envelopes from The American Cancer Society, please help them collect pledges per lap or flat donations. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference, and all donations to ACS are tax deductible. ACS is a 501 (c)3 tax-exempt organization. Donations are not due back at school until May 20. Their federal tax ID number is 13-1788491. Our mission continues to be to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight to a world without cancer. Contact Caroline Thompson with any questions.
RIDE FOR MO
We have just enough staff and families to make this happen on Saturday, but would welcome any extra time or energy anyone has to join us or to help prepare. Maybe:
  • bake a high energy treat for riders who pass by, bring them to school by Friday
  • donate to the purchasing of rider snacks, give funds to Krystal
  • join us at this location on the Granby Road (about 10 minutes northeast of East Burke) anytime between 11:00-2:00 to cheer on and support riders in Mo's memory
Moriah's mom Karen says: "Moriah was gaining a heightened level of appreciation for the meaning and purpose of "community" shortly before leaving this earth. She was dreaming dreams beyond the podium that would give back to her hometown community and beyond. As she was reflecting on her roots, I believe she had a sense of deep gratitude for all the ways our "village" inspired her to be the person she had become and she wanted to do the same for others. All of you are participating in keeping her dream alive in this event by benefitting the Moriah Wilson Foundation's mission, and I believe she sends you her love for that.
Please email Nelia if you want to join us.
HELP THE SUPER RAFFLE!
Thank you everyone, all of our tickets have been sold, which means we can award the grand prizes as planned! About 1 out of every 5 tickets will win an awesome prize; the last three tickets drawn win cash prizes of $250, $750, and $1500!

We’re excited to share the afternoon with you all at Riverside’s largest fundraiser of the year! Mark your calendars to attend the drawing on Saturday, May 11 at 3:00 pm. With wet and cold weather predicted, we plan to move the event to the barn. There will be food and entertainment, and you are welcome to bring your own beverage of choice.

Help Needed: We are still hoping to find some help with donated finger foods and/or help with set up beginning at 1:30pm. Foods like dips, meatballs, cocktail items, vegetable or charcuterie platters are recommended. Please email Claudia and Tonia by Wednesday if you can lend a hand or bring a dish.
K-3rd SPRING FIELD TRIPS
Each year we enjoy celebrating the culmination of learning together with special off-campus adventures for each group of students. Keep a close eye on this section of the Memo for updates each week with specific transportation details, packing lists, and volunteer needs.
  • K-2nd Grade is going to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science on Wednesday, May 29, by carpools.
  • 3rd Grade is going to Squam Lake Science Center on Thursday, May 16 by carpools.
4-8th SPRING FIELD TRIP TO QUEBEC CITY
4-8th Grade will be going to Quebec City, May 15-17 by carpools, staying in the Auberge Internationale. Start preparing now for some unusual packing list items since we are crossing the border. Students will need:
  • either (in order of preference) a passport/passport card, original/certified birth certificate, or copy of birth certificate. Nelia is ready to start collecting these documents now, which will be stored in her office and with an adult throughout the trip.
  • CA$30 for dinner
  • not more than CA$15 extra spending money.
  • Students are not permitted to bring cell phones on the Field Trip. We want to encourage students to interact with each other in person, in large and small groups, and within ear- and eye-shot of adults. Adult chaperones will take plenty of pictures and share them. Should a student need to make a call, a chaperone will help them do so on their phone.

Parents: Please begin talking at home about these topics, in an effort to team with us on the broad learning opportunities and goals for our maturing students with an experience like this. Our teachers know these are important things to explain and discuss in advance; hearing them at home from a different voice will deepen and reinforce them.
  • (if the no cell phone rule feels challenging) Your relationship with your personal technology and how it affects social learning experiences
  • The implications and logistics of crossing an international border
  • The challenges of keeping track of your belongings (in a car, in a shared room, on a long day's adventure)
  • A hostel vs a hotel, and the social norms of being a hotel guest
  • Having the eyes of a learner when exploring a new place, even outside of specific activities.
  • How the subtle ways in which new cultures feel different (language, customs, laws)
  • Any knowledge of or prior experience you have with Quebec City specfiically.

Chaperones: Please do provide your child with their own CA$, don't expect they'll always be with you. We also would like to have a chaperone meeting on Monday, May 13 from 3:45-4:30; here is a virtual link if you can't make it in person. We understand not everyone will be able to make it, but we think it's another strategy for best planing and communication for this large trip. Your will need:
  • a passport/passport card/enhanced license (which is not the same as a "real ID")
  • international data on cellphone plans
SPRING CONCERT
This year's Spring Concert will be on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 in the Pavilion, featuring PK-5th grade students and the middle school band. Families are encouraged to bring picnics and beverages, blankets and chairs. Band and 5th grade performers should arrive at 5:00 and go to the yurt to prepare their instruments; PK-4th graders should arrive at 5:15 and look for their group sitting area with their teacher.

We will also be presenting some of our end-of-year awards at this event. We expect it to conclude by 7:00 pm.
YEARBOOKS
The Yearbook Elective, led by 8th graders Maya and Sitota, is nearly finished designing this year's memento, which will be handed out to students with time to share and write in each other's books on the last day of school. We will have a copy printed for each student, at a cost of $16 each on your school store bill, unless you email Krystal to let her know you do not want one, or that you want siblings to share one. If your children will be sharing a yearbook, please work with them in advance to determine a strategy for getting it signed during that hour-long activity on the last day of school.
LAST DAY FUN
Friday, May 31 will be our last day of school, filled with fun activities in mixed age groups that celebrate our year together. Stay tuned to future MMs for details about biking to school, yearbook signing, talent show, and more. It is a full day with the usual dismissal times at 3:00 and 3:30.
PK-8 GRADUATION & POTLUCK
Our 43rd Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, June 1 at 10:00 am, followed by a community potluck. Please plan to attend as we count this important tradition as a school day in our calendar, with choral performances by PK-8, awards for all ages, and specific honors for the graduates. Students should arrive at 9:45 for the 10:00 ceremony. Please bring a main dish or salad to share for lunch, with a label of ingredients. If you're child(ren) will not be at graduation, can you please let Krystal and their classroom teacher know ASAP so that we can plan accordingly.
LIBRARY AND CLASSROOM BOOKS
As we approach the end of the year we would like to collect and re-organize all of Riverside's library books as well as each teacher's classroom library. Please search your homes for any texts that might belong to us and return them.
24-25 CALENDAR
Here is the draft of next year's calendar. We having been working on it since February and try our best to check every detail within, but we do make mistakes. Please let us know if you find one or have questions! After we revise any errors, the final version will be sent out in hard copy with the report and summer work mailing in June and with the back to school mailing in August, as well as linked in the Early Summer and Late Summer Memos.

You'll note that one new feature of next year's calendar are three additional half day Wednesdays, which we will help our teachers work toward their goals in professional development and collaborative planning.

The session will be facilitated by John Guilfoil Public Relations; dinner and childcare will be provided; the NEKC School Board will be meeting after, 6:00-7:00.
