January 2025 eNEWS

In this newsletter I'll be writing about how to use Modeling Glass in your work, and hopefully answering some questions that will help you get the results you want. There's always a learning curve with a new product, and there are considerations working with frit and powder that you don't have when firing sheet glass. There is a full set of FAQs on the Modeling Glass website at www.modelingglass.com. You can also find back issues of all my e-newsletters there!

NEW DIRECTIONS FOR A NEW YEAR

Winter's quiet and cold days lend themselves to studio time and introspection. I have enjoyed creating new work, especially developing projects for the ebook I plan to release later this year. I'm looking forward to sharing new ideas for working with Modeling Glass, and I hope you become inspired to try your own experiments with this very versatile material.

The photo at right is my newest piece. It measures approx. 6" x 6" x 6" so it's a miniature landscape of sorts. I wanted to capture the vanishingly brief moment of snow on the forest floor after a brief storm. Twigs, stones, and autumn leaves are melting out of the snow, while transparent droplets document the transition of ice back into water. It's a meditation on climate change and how snowy winters are dwindling in places like the Southwest, where I live. Will there one day be winters without snow here? It's not impossible to imagine.

All the components are made from Bullseye powders, and the "snow" is fine frit. The twigs and leaves were fired in a sand bed. More on that in the new ebook!! This is an exciting direction that I plan to explore further this year.

2025 WORKSHOPS

Here are the workshops I have scheduled. I'm looking forward to meeting new artists and sharing all the cool things you can do with Modeling Glass! There are fewer classes this year so I have time to work on the ebook and some upcoming new video content.

This is the ONLY feather workshop I have scheduled, and the first time I'll be teaching how to make the incredible Amazon Parrot feathers shown above.

April 2-6 Glass Craft & Bead Expo, Las Vegas, NV

(Modeling Glass demos at the Milkweed Arts booth, 1114 and 1120)

June 5/12/19 Warm Glass UK live webinar collaborating with Bob Leatherbarrow

July TBD Three-day workshop at The Groove Art Space, Albuquerque NM

Modeling Glass was developed by Lois Manno of Glass Bird Studios. It is a two-part system made of a powdered binder and liquid medium that, mixed with frit or powders along with a little water, turns the powder into a material that can be sculpted like clay. It is featured in the workshops she teaches.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT LWAGA?

Sometimes I can be the last person to pick up on a great resource, and that's the case with Larry Pile's Facebook group Lunch With A Glass Artist (LWAGA). It's a private group with 4,000 members and features one-hour talks by glass artists of all stripes. Many of these folks are luminaries you will have heard of, like Gil Reynolds, Evelyn Gottschall Baker, Stephen Richard, Barbara Cashman, and Paul Tarlow. The talks are recorded and available to members indefinitely. And it's all free! They also have discussions where artists can get input and troubleshoot. I was honored to present during their most recent weekly LWAGA. Check them out on Facebook and join in!
