“Why is it so Cold? Because it’s January!”
Upon arrival at Longboat Key this week, visitors will change into their Bermuda shorts and linen shirts and venture to the beaches to put their feet in the water. They must find it humorous that many of our residents are walking around in snowsuits, parkas, and mukluks.
Kinda funny, actually. One would think that Florida residents are still wearing flip-flops this time of year, but in reality, it’s just the opposite. The only ones who are not wearing heavy winter clothing are visitors, and it’s not because our visitors aren’t cold. They are. Instead, visitors are trying to prove that they are tougher than Mother Nature’s greatest effort, which of course, is untrue.
Why is it so cold? Because it’s January! This week’s weather is the reason why Florida residents no longer live in places like Utah, Minnesota, or Kavik, Alaska. Most Floridians are here because we prefer the oppressive August heat over January’s frozen tundras. We prefer to walk around town in our underwear and tank tops rather than have to put on a heavy coat to go to the restroom.
Now, I’m sure many of us will be trying to focus on the cold January weather when our air conditioner goes out later this year. Like our current visitors, we’ll try to prove that we are stronger than Mother Nature, attempting to survive the oppressive heat and bug infestations. But for now, many Floridians look more like native Alaskans, because it’s January.
That’s okay. Nobody, except our visitors, is making fun of us because we can’t handle this 40 and 50-degree weather. Mother Nature still lives somewhere down here; she hasn’t flown south for the winter. Instead, she’s dressed in her fur-lined garments watching our beach visitors jump in the ocean, just so they can prove to themselves that their vacation this week to Longboat Key, Florida, wasn’t a mistake.
I hope to see you soon, in person or online, at the Chapel!
God Bless, Brock.
