From the Pastor
I spent last week with fellow American Baptist women in ministry in Atlanta, a city I had not previously explored. In the times between sitting in a frigid hotel conference room and cackling over a game of cards (yes, women pastors DO play cards 😉), our itinerary permitted space to experience the rich history of the ATL. Of course, this included visits to The King Center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and a quick, solo mission to the joyful Center for Puppetry Arts.
It was powerful, and the timing, impeccable.
Some have compared our nation's landscape to that of 1968. Beloved, we live in a time of increasing uncertainty and unrest. Sweeping student movements met by batons, the blockading of humanitarian aid, trepidation about this year's election, war, famine, transphobia, racism, restricting reproductive rights-
What will happen next?
Join us during this month of May for our theme of 'Come What May,' as we explore what it means to live in such a time as this. We'll be incorporating some Buddhist perspectives into the conversation to enrich the dialogue.
AND, this Sunday, we'll have a special treat after worship: Denison journalism student Hayden Mong will be offering us a special screening of his project, "Repaint Our Parish," - a piece about the rich history of UCG and our commitment to LGBTQ+ rights! It is a short documentary, and we will show it right in the Sanctuary. I hope you'll come to learn, listen, and support Doug Swift's very talented pupil!
Lastly, a joy: this week, we welcomed the Rev. Craig Showalter to UCG as our Interim Church Administrator - you can learn more about Craig below. After much thoughtful consideration and work on the part of your Board, we've hired Rev. Craig to learn all the 'ins and outs' of Louise's position in order to prepare us well for the future. To hear Louise and Craig laughing together this past week was pure JOY. So please, help to make Rev. Craig welcome when you see him!
In all, to quote one Sam Cooke, A Change Is Gonna Come...
