Root Camp Curriculum Orientation

This event is for teachers and educators involved in NYC DOE K-12 schools who are looking to bring nutrition education and basic cooking demos to their classrooms. The workshop will provide an overview to the program, curriculum and provide time for Q & A .

Join us for this virtual workshop on how to start your seeds indoors. We'll walk you through the steps of how to begin, including proper timing and planting care, supplies you will need and the process of germination all the way through transplanting into your garden.

School Gardens Seed Giveaway

We are happy to share that we have many seeds to distribute to DOE K-12 public schools in NYC! This year, we have a wide selection of vegetables, herbs, and flowers to choose from. Each school can get 15 packets of seeds (potentially more depending on demand).


Eligibility

  • You must be a DOE K-12 public or charter school in NYC
  • You must have an up-to-date school registration with GrowNYC
  • Register here on our website
  • Email schoolgardens@grownyc.org for help with registration.

Zero Waste Schools

We are very pleased to be continuing our work with Bronx schools this year. We are wrapping the fall cohort of schools newly converted to Curbside Composting, and we are preparing to begin supporting the Spring cohort of schools. Here's a special shout out to Dean Richards and the J.H.S. 131 Green Team. More Bronx progress below.

Teaching Garden on Governors Island

The Teaching Garden has been put to rest for the winter season. We can't wait to resume programming in the Spring. Sign up on Explorable Places to join our waitlist so you and your classroom or club can join us in 2023. 






Curriculum Spotlight

GrowNYC is partnering with Ample Table for Everyone to offer Root Camp, a free 10-lesson curriculum on nutrition and food awareness. Root Camp is targeted at upper elementary and middle school students and is easily adaptable for other groups. It has been successful in D75 schools as well.

 

Root Camp features a cooking demo in each lesson. Along with the curriculum, GrowNYC provides cooking supplies and a stipend to eligible schools.

Register Your School Garden

All DOE K-12 public and charter schools can register with GrowNYC School Gardens. Once you register, you'll have access to our free programming, supplies, and technical assistance from our team. 


If you've registered your school in the past, make sure it's up to date - you must renew your registration each year in order to be eligible for upcoming giveaways and opportunities.
