Do you have an idea for a habitat restoration or environmental education project? You could receive a Bay Mini-Grant to make that idea a reality. Apply this summer!

Projects must be in the Tampa Bay watershed and support one of the many goals or activities described in the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan for Tampa Bay.  Businesses, nonprofits, schools, neighborhood associations, and many more organizations are eligible to apply for this grant.

Let’s turn that idea into action!  Check out the details on TBEP’s website and register for the webinar for an overview of the program and tips on submitting a strong application. If you’re not sure that your idea is a good fit for Bay Mini-Grants, reach out to Jessica Lewis at jlewis@tbep.org. She’ll provide candid feedback and suggestions to make your application a strong contender for this competitive grant.

Apply between May 8 and September 13, 2024

Did you know that May 25th is World Fish Migration Day? This campaign is celebrated every two years to help us understand how migratory fish connect with other animals and places around the globe. Many fish start their lives in rivers and estuaries and then move to different places as they grow.

Scientists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are studying how sport fish move within Tampa Bay and nearby waters. They put transmitters on juvenile fish in a restored nursery area of Robinson Preserve to track where the fish go as they get older. So far, they've found that many of the fish are migrating  to adult habitats outside of the preserve. This information helps natural resource managers design future habitat restoration projects to support fish populations. Read more about the study here: https://tbep-tech.github.io/robinson-sport-fish/

Whether fish are traveling long distances or just moving in a small area, it's important to understand how they move (or why they can’t). Tune into the livestream event on May 25 to learn more about World Fish Migration Day and events occurring around the world: https://www.youtube.com/@Worldfishmigrationday

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recently created a list of best fishing practices for anglers targeting tarpon. Recommendations focus on what gear to use, fighting techniques, handling tips, and release strategies. By following these practices, anglers can quickly and confidently reel in tarpon and help one of Florida’s most iconic saltwater fish species survive release.

Love fishing for tarpon? Get your fix even when you’re not on the water by reeling in the Tampa Bay Specialty License Plate, featuring a silvery tarpon! Proceeds from the sale of this plate aid restoration and conservation in Tampa Bay. At only $17 a year, it’s an easy and affordable way to help Tampa Bay!
