CUNY Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost Visits LaGuardia
On October 31, Wendy F. Hensel, CUNY’s Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost, came to the LaGuardia campus to visit with students, faculty and staff as part of her university-wide visits. During her visit, Hensel met with Academic Chairs to discuss pedagogy and modality, and she visited various facilities and programs including the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, and the Nursing (RN & LPN) Program. Hensel also visited the Veterinary Technology Lab. Student Success Mentors, Peer Mentors, and members of the President’s Society and Senate Students also had an opportunity to meet with Hensel to discuss their learning experience at LaGuardia.
The EVC’s visit concluded with a town hall, where questions were welcomed from the college community, moderated by LaGuardia’s Provost Dr. Billie Gastic Rosado. In remarks, Hensel noted that this is a moment of inflection in higher education. She spoke about efforts underway at CUNY Central to remove barriers to student success, such as low enrollment and difficulty transferring credits between CUNY schools. Initiatives underway to address these barriers include working closely with the NYC DOE to help high school students see themselves as college material and establishing seamless transfer across all CUNYs. Another major initiative is underway to bring in developers and instructional designers to work with faculty and instructors to provide high-quality online learning options, for both degree and Continuing Education programs. Stay tuned for more to come on these and other new initiatives.

LaGuardia’s Email is Transitioning to the Cloud
Information Technology (IT) is happy to announce that LaGuardia is transitioning from our current email system to Microsoft 365 (M365), a cloud-based email system that will significantly increase our ability to securely share and integrate files with Office 365 apps from a variety of devices. Among the many benefits to this upgrade:
- A much larger mailbox – Up to 100 times larger than the standard mailbox size.
- Cloud based email and calendars – Increased reliability and access.
- Increased Security – Features multi-factor authentication (MFA) and security tools.
All CUNY campuses are moving to Microsoft 365 and IT is working closely with CUNY/CIS to ensure an efficient transition. IT is projecting to have the new email system in place for faculty and staff during winter 2022-23.
Please check your emails regularly for more information about M365 benefits and the transition including what will change, what will stay the same, how the new system will work to your benefit, the availability of a comprehensive M365 web page, and progress updates.

For the Spring 2023 semester, CUNY will be adhering to its current COVID-19 vaccination policy for students. As reminder, the policy stipulates the following.
- Students registering for in-person classes must be fully vaccinated, i.e., have received 2 doses in a 2-dose series, or have received a single-dose of the J&J vaccine.
- Students who register for in-person classes will be dropped if they do not upload proof of vaccination.
- No proof of vaccination is necessary when registering for online courses.
- Vaccination is not required for students fully registered in ALL online classes.
- Booster shots are highly encouraged but not required.
Please note that students requesting religious exceptions or medical exemptions should do so 30 days before the drop date for noncompliance. As always, the University will continue to monitor the vaccination requirements in light of the current public health guidance and keep the CUNY community updated accordingly.

Asian American/Asian Research Institute to Host Faculty Development Seminar
The Asian American/Asian Research Institute (AAARI) at CUNY is hosting an Asian American Studies Faculty Development Seminar in Spring 2023 to support the expansion of Asian American Studies in our CUNY classrooms. This seminar's approach is rooted in the interdisciplinary field of Asian American Studies and centers a locally relevant and specific understanding of Asian American and Pacific Islander experiences in New York City. A key tactic to achieve this goal is attending to narratives by and about new, diasporic, and/or refugee immigrant communities, as well as current and historic NYC AAPI movements for social, racial, and economic justice. The Faculty Development Seminar Series is open to all CUNY faculty interested in beginning, revising, or strengthening their approach to teaching Asian American Studies. Applications are due November 7.

Boosting Enrollment by Giving Young People a Two-Month Taste of LaGuardia
Thanks to generous funding from The Carroll & Milton Petrie Foundation ($100,000) and The Heckscher Foundation for Children ($138,098), LaGuardia will offer young people the opportunity to try out a college-level course for free, here on campus. The College & Career Connect (CCC) program will aim to serve 80 New York City public high school graduates (Classes of ’20, ’21, and ’22) who are not enrolled in college; 40 students in each of the two cohorts. The program involves a short-term, 2-month commitment, with successful completion leading to the earning of free credits (3) that will satisfy degree requirements at LaGuardia, should the students choose to enroll. The goal is to provide the experience of being a college student at LaGuardia by showcasing the range of support available to students—from tutors and peer mentors to financial assistance—as well as welcoming them into the LaGuardia community. Weekly MetroCards and a stipend will incentive participation. Recruitment will begin with students from LaGuardia’s three Early College partners—Energy Tech High School, International High School, and Middle College High School, as well as LaGuardia’s 31 College Now high school partners. Ellen Quish, director of First Year Programming & Student Success, is the program’s lead PI. CCC was developed with input from both Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management leaders, and was based on an idea from LaGuardia’s director of recruitment Shannon Lund.
