e-Pistle for Sunday, May 5, 2024

Dear Katharine,

Come One, Come All to Bargain Haul!

This week, St. Andrew’s is all about Bargain Haul. For the past 6 days, over 70 volunteers have come to church each day to help receive goods and set up 11 basement rooms. The entire basement is now a pop-up thrift shop. Three cheers for Wendy Barry and Bob Ware, our fearless co-leaders, who have outdone themselves and have been inspiring us along the way.

Tonight, Friday night, we have our Bargain Haul Parish Night from 6pm-8pm.

Join us for a fun parish evening: a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, and drinks, and fun for the whole family. All rooms are open – including the toy and book rooms – for shoppers of all ages.

Saturday morning from 8am-12pm we hold the Public Sale. We open our doors to our neighbors who are looking for quality items at excellent prices.

All the proceeds of Bargain Haul will go to our outreach work. Thousands of dollars of profit will be ploughed back into our outreach service work and the charities which support it.

Whether you are a Bargain Haul veteran or a newcomer to St. Andrew’s this year, join us on Friday night and be a part of this significant outreach fund-raising weekend. You will be amazed to discover how much good can be done, and how many outreach dollars can be raised, when our church community works together to make it happen.

This Sunday, we have a special Kid’s Place Coffee Hour for parents of children (infants to age 6) after the 10am service. Join us outside or in Kid’s Place if it rains. This is a special invitation to newcomers who have small children. Drink coffee (or juice boxes) and get to know the parents and young children of St. Andrew’s.

Curious about what makes a war “just?” Join us at 9am when we consider “Just War Theory: A Christian Perspective.” Read more about this class and other upcoming events in our notes below.

Yours in Christ, Margaret

Dame Julian of Norwich

c.1342–c.1417

Of Dame Julian’s early life, we know little, only the probable date of her birth. Her own writings in the Revelations of Divine Love are concerned only with her visions that she experienced when she was thirty years old. She had been gravely ill and was given the last rites; suddenly, on the seventh day, all pain left her, and she had fifteen visions of the Passion. These brought her great peace and joy. “From that time, I desired oftentimes to learn what was our Lord’s meaning,” she wrote, “and fifteen years after I was answered in ghostly understanding: ‘Wouldst thou learn the Lord’s meaning in this thing? Learn it well. Love was his meaning. Who showed it thee? Love. What showed he thee? Love. Wherefore showed it he? For Love. Hold thee therein and thou shalt learn and know more in the same.’ Thus it was I learned that Love was our Lord’s meaning.” She became a recluse, an anchoress, at Norwich soon after her recovery from illness, living in a small dwelling attached to the Church of St. Julian. Even in her lifetime, she was famed as a mystic and spiritual counselor and was frequently visited by clergymen and lay persons. Many have found strength in the words the Lord had given her: “I can make all things well; I will make all things well; I shall make all things well; and thou canst see for thyself that all manner of things shall be well.”

Her feast day is May 8.

Lord God, in your compassion you granted to the Lady Julian many revelations of your nurturing and sustaining love: Move our hearts, like hers, to seek you above all things, for in giving us yourself you give us all; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

News and Announcements

Bake for Bargain Haul Bake Sale

One of the many highlights of Bargain Haul will be the bake sale during the public sale on Saturday, May 4. Shoppers will need fuel (think sugar) to sort through the many wonderful rooms, and we are looking for volunteers to bake their favorite finger food desserts to sell at the bake sale. Popular items include Rice Krispies treats, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc. If you are able to bake something, it will be greatly appreciated! Please label your treats “Bake Sale” and drop them off in the St. Andrew’s kitchen on Friday, May 3. (No need to bag anything individually.) Contact Jenny Sawyer

Photos for Parish Directory

We are working in Realm on our parish photo directory. We need photographs of each parishioner as well as each family unit. We encourage you to add your own individual photos, but you will have to send the family photo to Kate. NOTE: the family photo will print in the directory, the individual photo will appear when other parishioners look you up in Realm Connect. There are additional instructions in the Realm Connect news feed for assistance (see below announcement). If you would prefer, we can facilitate all your photo upload, just send your photographs to Kate@standrewswellesley.org

Realm Account Reminder

Realm is our database and our online directory. All our parishioners are there, and pictures of families and individuals are being uploaded! Over the last program year, you will have received a few email invitations to join the online directory. They came from "St Andrew’s Episcopal Church notifications@onrealmmail.org" Please look in your spam or junk mail for the email if you cannot find it easily.

If you have not registered for an account with Realm, please ask Kate for help. I can send you a reminder invitation. There is also an app for your phone called Realm Connect. Look for it in the App Store or Google Play Store. kate@standrewswellesley.org

Join us Sunday, May 12, for Resurrection: What is it? taught by Rev. Margaret Schwarzer. Come for all our classes or just the ones that interest you. Everyone is welcome. There is childcare at 8:55am in Kids’ Place so parents can join. Classes are hybrid and the Zoom link is here. —Rev. Faith in Motion: Walk to End Homelessness

Please join team captain Debbie Osborn and other St. Andrew's walkers on Sunday, May 5, at noon, at Natick High School, for the walk, which benefits our outreach partner Family Promise Metrowest in their efforts to help homeless shelter residents transition into permanent housing. The walk is an easy 2.3 miles in Natick, and you can walk, run, trot, or just sponsor our team. Registration and event details are at Register for the 2024 Walk to End Homelessness or contact Debbie Osborne. Note: The housing crisis in the Boston Metrowest area has become more painful for many more families than ever before, and this is an important fundraiser which will support the work Family Promise does with over 100 families.

Youth Bake Sale Fundraiser

This year’s confirmation class chose Give Directly and The Pine Street Inn for their Lenten outreach projects. We will be baking and selling baked goods during coffee hour on Sunday, May 19. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to contribute: cookies, cakes, pies, bread, and any other baked goods you can imagine for this outreach effort. Please contact Sarah with questions.

Outreach Grant Nominations

Each year, as part of our outreach ministry, we provide grants of up to $5,000 each to selected charitable organizations nominated by parishioners. Have a favorite charity? Nominate it! Selection details and grant applications are available on our website, under Serve: Outreach. Applications for the next round are due by May 31.

B-Safe: Summer 2024 is coming!

During the week of July 29 to August 2, we will be hosting the St. Stephen’s B-SAFE week. We will be providing 60 grocery bags of food for St. Stephen's Youth Program families. We will need volunteers Monday through Wednesday, July 29 to 31 to prepare bags to deliver to St. Stephen's.

Then, save the date of Friday, August 2 for the fun summer field trip at St. Andrew's, starting with games, karaoke, origami, and crafts. Volunteers needed, no experience necessary—kids and adults welcome—to make this day possible. The kids will pack their own picnic lunch from grab-and-go options and take the bus to a state park for an afternoon of swimming.

Look for the Signup in Realm soon. 2024 is our 25th summer of involvement with SSYP: let's make it our best ever! Contact Karen Pekowitz or Cam McCormick
