Weekly News

Sunday Worship:

At the General Conference of the United Methodist Church the delegates made the United Methodist stance on homosexuality once again neutral. In 1972 harsh and hurtful phrases about our LGBTQ brothers and sisters were added to the Book of Discipline. In 2024 these phrases were removed. These changes to the Book of Discipline do not indicate everyone in the United Methodist Church suddenly agrees in our understandings about homosexuality. However, they do allow for space for congregations and individuals with differing experiences and theological convictions to discuss and listen and grow. It will also allow for healing to take place among those who have been hurt by our unloving words.

The changes at General Conference will mean the following within the United Methodist Church:

  • Pastors will have the right to choose what types of weddings they perform.
  • Local churches will have the right to determine the types of weddings they will allow.
  • Persons are not prohibited from ordination due to openly being LGBTQ or being in a same-gender relationship.
  • Bishops cannot force a local church to accept or refuse an openly LGBTQ clergy.

There have been other changes as well. For instance, Deacons will now be allowed to consecrate Communion, regionalization of the United States has been approved but still must be ratified by annual conferences, and a way has been made for churches who disaffiliated to return to the United Methodist Church. It has truly been an historic General Conference.

If you have any questions or concerns, as usual, my door is always open!

God bless,

Pastor Jana

2024 General Conference Information

Who makes decisions for The United Methodist Church if there is no one person in charge? Good question. The only body that can set official policy and speak for our denomination is the General Conference.

The General Conference this year has much to discuss and decisions made will effect our local church and United Methodist Churches in general. If you would like to know more, take a look at the following information:

  • Central Texas Conference Info - Click Here to be taken to our Annual Conference website which has news about what our Central Texas Conference Delegates are thinking and doing.
