High School Service Learning

From Bonnie McClelland, HS Administrator

Thank you to Lisa Fager of Black Georgetown for making it possible for our high school to visit the Mt. Zion / Female Union Band Society (FUBS) cemeteries today, for welcoming us to this hallowed ground and sharing the history of the place and some of the people buried there, as well as the importance of these cemeteries in the history of the Underground Railroad. Her dedication to protecting these historic African American cemeteries and her joy in discovering and sharing their stories was palpable as she took us around the grounds. Because of the historical connections between many of the people interred in the cemeteries and neighboring Dumbarton House, we also toured the house and appreciated the welcome from the museum staff there. We finished our visit by respecting the ancestors with weeding work around the cemeteries. HS students, thank you for being open to this experience and for the weeding!

Many of us - faculty too - who grew up in the DC area or have lived here for years had no knowledge of the Mt. Zion / FUBS cemeteries. It was a gift for us to learn, to shine a light on this local history, and to contribute in some real way to the preservation of this important place.

If you would also like to learn about the Mt. Zion / FUBS cemeteries, we recommend this short video as a place to start. We also recommend the Black Georgetown site for information about visiting and volunteering. You can follow them on Instagram.

“The Matchmaker”

by Thornton Wilder

Thursday, May 16 at 7pm and Friday, May 17 at 4pm

What happens when citizens from Yonkers, NY head to New York City in search of adventure? Guided by enterprising matchmaker, Dolly Levi, it becomes an adventure for fools, a foolish adventure, and a warm hearted romantic farce all rolled into one. Grade 12 welcomes you to their production of The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder. Come along for this "rom com" adventure on Thursday, May 16 at 7pm and Friday, May 17 at 4pm.

Audience guidance - the performance contains one use of profanity as well as reference to and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

“The Matchmaker” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

Simplicity Parenting Family Life Course at WWS

Saturday Mornings in May & June from 9-11am

May 11 & 18 and June 1 & 8

Too often, giving our children the kind of nurturing, values-centered family life we know serves them best can feel like a constant or even impossible struggle. Thankfully, the Simplicity Parenting Family Life course offers parents the resources and supportive environment to transform struggle into a more peaceful and harmonious family life.

Based on the research and clinical work of renowned family counselor Kim John Payne, the course offers a Waldorf-aligned approach for parents to implement simple and doable techniques and practices at home to achieve less stress and overwhelm and more joy and connection.

The course meets over 4 weeks on Saturday mornings and is a terrific opportunity for parents to not only discover new tools together but also to build a supportive environment for each other that sustains positive change.

The course will run on Saturdays at WWS from 9-11am and is taught by WWS' own Drew Sample. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to attend all four classes as the content will be different each week and build upon previous weeks' content.

Register Today!

The course fee is covered by WWS but there is a small ($30) materials fee to be paid directly to Simplicity Parenting, which you'll receive a link for after registering.

Summer Camps 2024

Summer-2024 image

Many of our Lower School summer camps still have some openings! This is a great way to keep your child connected to their friends and school during those long months between June and September. Your child can explore new cultures and cuisines with our very own Mr. Joaquin; shoot some hoops and learn new skills with the amazing Taisto; explore the DC area (on a bike… or not); and enjoy summer as it should be.

Contact Margaret Mansker with any questions: mmansker@washingtonwaldorf.org

Please note that we will be reviewing our enrollment in each camp at the end of the week to determine whether the camp will proceed. If you signed up for a camp that is under-enrolled, you will be offered the choice of moving to a different camp or receiving a full refund.
