About Claudette
Claudette Hubbard—proud mother, grandmother, and Jamaican-born owner of Klaudette’s Kitchen in Los Angeles—has lived in the United States as a lawful permanent resident (also known as a green card holder) since she was 17 years old. Now, at the age of 68, ICE seeks to deport her to Jamaica and take away her green card for a nonviolent drug conviction from over three decades ago. Claudette is seeking a presidential pardon, which would prevent her deportation. In the final days of the Biden Administration, we amplify Claudette’s pardon request that is sitting on President Biden’s desk and urge him to provide Claudette with a second chance.
Claudette is a beloved member of her community—anyone who knows Claudette knows her joy, sense of humor, and tenacity. Claudette has two children and three grandchildren. Claudette is a devout Christian and active in her church, a volunteer for an organization mentoring youth impacted by mass incarceration, and she frequently hands out delicious Jamaican meals from Klaudette’s Kitchen to the unhoused population of Los Angeles. She is currently making food for persons impacted from the L.A. fires.
There is an ongoing deportation case against Claudette. For over ten years now, Claudette has lived with the constant threat of deportation to Jamaica: a country she has not lived in for over 50 years, a country she has visited on only 4 brief occasions in her entire adult life. This threat weighs heavily on Claudette and her family every day. Claudette deserves to rest. She deserves to remain in her home with her family, in her community where she has grown deep roots, in the country where her son is buried. She deserves to be free from a second round of punishment for a mistake she made over 30 years ago. Claudette belongs in her L.A. community and this country. President Biden has the power to pardon her crime and keep her home.
